He appeared in 62 games (61 starts) during the 2021 season, hitting.250 (53-for-212) with four doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 26 RBI, 32 runs, and five steals. He played in 51 games at shortstop and 10 at third base as a freshman starter, earning him 2021 Freshman All-SEC and All-Tournament Team honors from the NCAA’s Eugene Regional.

After batting.381 (8-for-21) in five games and being a key contributor to LSU’s extra-innings victories against UT San Antonio, he was awarded SEC Co-Freshman of the Week for the first time on March 15.
The Tigers beat the Mets 10-9 on March 13 thanks to a walk-off home run by Thompson in the bottom of the 13th inning. The next day, with LSU down 12-9 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Thompson blasted a one-out, two-run homer to cut the deficit to 12-11; LSU went on to tie the game in the 10th and win it in the 11th by a score of 13-12.
Rise to Fame
With LSU in the 2022 season, he started all 62 games (55 at shortstop, 7 at second base), hit.286 (63-for-220), added 14 doubles, six home runs, 36 RBI, and 54 runs scored, and hit.349 (22-for-63) with runners in scoring position. At the NCAA regional in Hattiesburg, he hit.294 (5-for-17) with two doubles, five RBI, and one run scored.
In the bottom of the ninth inning of LSU’s NCAA Regional game against Southern Miss on June 4, Thompson’s two-out RBI single knotted the game at 6-6, and the Tigers went on to win, 7-6, in 10 innings. Thompson batted.467 (7-for-15) with one home run, four RBI, and five runs scored against Vanderbilt in their May 19-21 series.
His two-run homer in the fourth inning of the Tigers’ 8-4 win over UL Lafayette on April 19 was the big blow in the comeback from a 2-1 deficit. On April 9, LSU beat Mississippi State 4-3 thanks to his solo home run in the sixth inning that snapped a 3-3 tie. In the Florida series (March 25-27), he hit.417 (5-for-12) with two doubles, four runs, and one RBI.
At the Shriners College Classic on March 4 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Thompson hit a walk-off home run to start the bottom of the 11th inning, giving LSU a victory over Oklahoma.
