Elina Svitolina was born on September 12, 1994, in Odesa, Ukraine, to competitive rower Olena Svitolina and former wrestler Mikhaylo Svitolin. She has an elder brother named Yulian who is also a comedian, and she was named after the Soviet star Elina Bystritska. Svitolina started playing tennis at the age of five, after getting inspiration from her brother. When she was 13 years old, she relocated to Kharkiv to attend the Olympic Reserve School.
