Trudy’s parents divorced in 1978 and her father married for the fourth time. In 1989, Gussie left the world and her mother died in 2016. Though information about her primary education cannot be accessed, it is reported Trudy went to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1975. In 1980, she received a nursing degree from Saint Louis University and later got a degree in Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from the Aquinas Institute of Theology.

She started her career in 1991 as a member of the Colorado Springs City Council. From 1997 to 2003, she worked as the mayor of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She helped in the expansion of businesses in the city and also worked on its infrastructural development. In 2003, after her term ended, she went on to open a consulting business.
