Roland Abante is a Filipino singer-songwriter who shot to popularity after auditioning for the 18th season of America’s Got Talent in June 2023, during week 3. Since Roland could only speak and understand a limited amount of English, a translator accompanied him to his first audition.
He received a standing ovation and astonished the judges after delivering his own interpretation of the iconic When a Man Loves a Woman song. Abante told the judges before the audition that his greatest desire was to be on America’s Got Talent, despite doing his regular day job as a Fisherman in the Philippines.
Early Life
Roland Abante was born in the Philippines on August 3, 1978. He grew up in Santander, a rural hamlet on the Philippine island of Cebu. Abante, however, has not yet disclosed the names of his parents and siblings to the general world. As the eldest of his family, he endured a childhood in a disadvantaged area with very few resources. Roland’s parents had a hard time making ends meet. He was resilient enough to overcome his urban hardships.
When he ran out of money for food, he would spend his evenings singing karaoke for pleasure. A few years later, a trusted buddy came through for him by offering him a position in the fishing industry. Roland also started working at a motorcycle delivery service, where he shuttled customers and their stuff about town.
Roland Abante Career
Roland first began singing in elementary school and soon became a popular performer at school functions. While still in high school, he started playing guitar and singing in pubs. Following graduation, he attended Bulacan State University and received a degree in Education.
While he was in college, Roland did neighborhood gigs and entered singing contests. His first victory came in a collegiate talent event in 2008. He became more well-known in his hometown after his victory. He attempted to enter the singing competition “Tawag ng Tanghalan” on the hit Philippine noontime show “It’s Showtime” in 2011, however, he was eliminated in the preliminary round.
Roland, though, persisted with his performance schedule at area watering holes and festivals. He was dogged in his efforts to realize his goal of becoming a musician. His perseverance paid off when a video of him performing a Michael Bolton song went viral in 2014.

Abante is a gifted vocalist who shot to popularity after appearing on America’s Got Talent season 18 in 2023. Being on the AGT stage alongside his favorite judge, Simon Cowell, was Roland’s Big Dream, therefore he was visibly moved during his first audition. Abante’s first audition was so moving that he received a bear hug from both Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell. With four affirmative votes from the judges, Abante advanced to the next round.
