Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in South Hampton, England in the United Kingdom. He was born to a Punjabi Hindu family who had emigrated from East Africa. His father Yashvir was born in Kenya and his mother Usha was born in Tanzania. He has two younger siblings. His brother, Sanjay, is a Psychologist and his sister, Rakhi, works at the Foreign, Common Wealth and Development Office as the Covid- 19 United Nations Engagement and strategy lead.
Sunak as a student attended a high school after which he attended Winchester College which was an all-boys boarding school. After that, he enrolled at Lincoln College in Oxford from where he graduated in 2001 majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. In 2006, he earned his MBA degree from Stanford University.
Rishi Sunak Career
Sunak started his career by working as an analyst for an investment bank called Golden Sachs between 2001 and 2004. After that, he worked at The Children’s Investment Fund Management which was a hedge fund management firm. He left the firm in 2009 and joined his former colleagues at a new hedge fund firm which was launched in October 2010. Rishi’s political journey started when he was selected as the Conservative Candidate for Richmond in 2014. Later, he became the head of the Black and Minority Ethnic Research Unit for which he co-wrote a report on BME communities in the UK. In 2015, Rishi was elected as the MP for the constituency and during 2015- 2017, he was a member of the environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Select Committee.
Secretary
On July 24, 2019, Rishi was appointed as a Chief Secretary to the Treasurer by Prim Minister and he served under Chancellor Sajid Javid till February 2020. By February 2020, it was reported that Javid would remain the Chancellor and Rishi would stay as Chief Secretary to the Treasurer. On February 13, 2020, Rishi was appointed as the Chancellor of the Exchequer as Javid resigned from his position. Rishi had a meeting with Prime Minister on the same day he was announced as the Chancellor. Rishi’s first budget took place on March 11, 2020, which included the spending of 30 billion euros out of which 12 billion was allocated for the mitigation of the economic impact of the Covid -19.
Rishi announced that 330 billion euros would be spent for emergency support for business as well as for salary subsidies. That was the first time when the British government had created such a retention scheme which was announced on March 20, 2020. In 2021, Rishi announced that the deficit had risen to 355 billion euros until the end of the scheme in September. Rishi was the first Chancellor to raise the corporation tax rate since Healey in 1974. King Charles III appointed Rishi as the Prime Minister of the UK with great hope to lead the nation toward prosperity on 25th October 2022. After this announcement, he became the first British Asian as well as the first Hindu to be appointed to the British office.
