Early Life
Penei Sewell was born on 9th October 2000, in one of the villages of American Samoa called Malaeimi. He was born to Arlene Sewell (mother) and Gabriel Sewell (father) who was a sports team coach. Penei was raised up along with his three brothers – Gabriel, Nephi, and Noah. Nephi is also a football player and plays for Utah Utes Football and Noah is also a famous football linebacker for Oregon Ducks.
Penei’s father decided to move to St. George, Utah in 2012 so that his children could make it into the National Football League (NFL). Because of his father, Penei found his interest in the game of football after seeing his father train people as a coach. Penei attended Desert Hills High School where he played football for the school football team. In 2018, he played the US Army All-American and Polynesian Bowls for his school. He studied at the University of Oregon and joined the college football team Oregon Ducks.

Penei started playing football at an early age. He represented and played for his high school and college football teams. He won the Morris Trophy and Outland Trophy when he was in college and was also selected as co-recipients of the 2019 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award. Penei had to opt out from the NFL draft in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but got selected seventh overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2021 NLF draft. Later he was tested positive for Covid-19 and thus was not able to continue playing. After recovering in May ‘21, he signed a four-year rookie contract amounting to $24.1 million. He now plays as an Offensive Tackle for Detroit Lions.
