Mesha Mainor is an American politician and physical therapist. Mainor announced her switch from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party on July 11. The state representative for District 56 in Georgia said that she was expelled from the Democratic Party because she defied party doctrine on matters like school choice and criminal justice reform. Mainor added that the Republican Party appealed to her because it embraces a variety of thought and alternative policy proposals.
Early Life
Mesha Mainor was born on May 17, 1975, in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1996 and a master’s degree in physical therapy from Howard University in Washington, D.C. 2012 saw her complete a physical therapy doctorate at Alabama State University.
For more than 20 years, Mainor practiced medicine and served as a consultant. She had particular expertise in telemedicine, home health care, and geriatrics. Additionally, Mainor worked as an adjunct professor at Morehouse School of Medicine and Georgia State University.
Mesha Mainor Career
Mainor ran for the Georgia House of Representatives for District 56 in 2020 as a Democrat. She eliminated two other candidates in the primary election and received 51.8% of the vote. The district’s first Black woman representative, Mainor went on to win the main election with no opposition. Mainor ran for office to improve the quality of life for her constituents, especially elders, veterans, and children. She wanted to address issues such as healthcare, education, economic development, and public safety.
However, Mainor soon found herself at odds with her fellow Democrats over some of her positions and actions. She was the only Democrat to support a bill allowing pupils to utilize public funding to attend private schools instead of public ones. Mainor backed a measure that would have given courts the power to exclude district attorneys from cases if they engaged in misconduct or negligence of their duties.
Over committee assignments and campaign contributions, Mainor also had disagreements with several Democratic leaders. Mainor faced backlash and harassment from her party for breaking party orthodoxy. She was threatened to support a primary challenger against her and Democrats tried to sabotage her work, and slandered her publicly. At a press conference held in front of the Georgia Capitol on July 11, 2023, Mainor declared her decision to join the Republican Party.
Mainor thought that her principles and the Republican Party’s programs were better compatible. She said that she wanted to join a party that valued differing viewpoints and diverse policy proposals. With Mainor’s switch, Republicans now control the House 102-78. She becomes the first Black Republican woman to ever serve in the Georgia General Assembly and the only Black Republican among Georgia’s 236 state legislators.
