Lucrezia Stefanini is an emerging and talented Italian Tennis player who finally made her way to Wimbledon 2023 from qualifiers. She has seven ITF Circuit singles victories and two doubles titles. She now holds career-high WTA rankings of 105 in singles and 393 in doubles.
Early Life
Lucrezia Stefanini was born on May 15, 1998, in Firenze, Italy. She lives in a family of tennis players, her father Marco Stefanini, and mother Roberta Ardinghi are also her coaches, and her brother Jacopo, 20, is starting to achieve significant results in the future. Lucrezia began playing tennis at age 8 under the instruction of her father who served as her mentor until she was eighteen.
She competed for Italy in the U.14 Summer and U.16 Winter Cups. She also competed in the 2015 Youth Olympic Games for Italy in Utrecht, Netherlands. Her goals are to compete in the first Grand Slam and to rise to a position where she can participate regularly in WTA competitions.
Lucrezia Stefanini Career
In the 2014 ITF Brescia circuit, she participated in her first professional competition. In Schio in July 2016, she competed in her maiden ITF final but lost to Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova. Later in Hammamet in 2017, she defeated Eleni Kordolaimi of Greece to win her first trophy.
She competed in doubles with Tatiana Pieri and made it to the first ITF final in Sassuolo in June 2016. She lost to Alice Balducci and Deborah Chiesa in that match, but she went on to win the championship with the same partner in Pula in September after defeating Balducci and Marcella Cucca once more.
Lucrezia went back to the final twice in 2017 in Hammamet and lost to both the Russian Maria Marfutina and the American Elizabeth Halbauer. In doubles, she wins her second title in Bergamo, defeating Martina Colmegna and Ylena In-Albon in the final. Later, she competed in two additional doubles finals in Vienna and Porto.
She defeated Burundi tennis star Sada Nahimana at Monastir, still in Tunisia, to win her second singles title in 2019. She qualified for her WTA debut in Abu Dhabi in January 2021 by defeating Croatian Tena Lukas and Romanian Irina Fetecău.
The number 19 player in the world, Elena Rybakina, knocks her out in the first round with a double 6-3. She competed in the ITF event in Salinas in May and defeated top seed Susan Bandecchi in the championship match to claim the title. She won the $25,000 Radom event in August by defeating Miriam Kolodziejová.
Rise to Fame
Throughout the year, she competes in the main draw of WTA tournaments in Palermo and Tenerife, but her first win on the major circuit comes in Courmayeur, where she defeats Mandy Minella in three sets (6-3 3-6 7-5). She is knocked out in the second round by compatriot Jasmine Paolini, who wins in straight sets. On 6 February 2022, she won the ITF tournament in Sharm-el-Sheikh by defeating Romanian Alexandra Cadanţu-Ignatik in the final with a score of 6-2 3-0 and abandoned.
She competes in the first WTA competition of the year on clay in Bogota in April 2022, defeating Despina Papamichail in the opening round in straight sets. Lucrezia was eliminated in the second round after falling to the Russian Elina Avanesjan 6-2 in two sets. She participates in qualifying draws for the first time at the French Open and Wimbledon but loses in the first and second rounds, respectively.
After surviving the qualifying, she enters the Australian Open main draw for the first time in her career in 2023, reaching the second round. Despite winning an ITF $25,000 in Sharm el-Sheikh and a $40,000 on French hard in Calvi the following week, she lost an ITF $40,000 final in February.
