Jessica Berman, in full, Jessica C. Berman has remained an NHL’s former executive and the National Lacrosse League (NLL). She has now been nominated for the position of commissioner of the National Women’s Soccer League. Berman replaced Lisa Baird, who stepped down from her position last year in October 2021 because of the scandal involving sexual allegations against one of the coaches of the league. Berman’s appointment was announced on 9th March 2022 (Wednesday). She will be resuming her four-year tenure of the job from 20th April 2022.
Early Life
Jessica Berman has been living in her mid-40s and was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where she spent her whole life till adulthood. She went to Fordham University School of Law, where she received her education (J.D) and also served her other responsibilities involving Editor-in-Chief of the Fordham Sports Law Forum and an Associate Editor of the Urban Law Journal. Before this, she went to the University of Michigan, where she received her degree of B.S. in sports management in 1996.
She was awarded by the University of Michigan for the category of her achievements in 2009. Outside her profession in NHL and NLL, Jessica is an avid runner and has remained a part of various marathons and Tough Mudders. She has now been residing in Westchester, where she has been nurturing two dogs and two sons, who love to play hockey, soccer, and lacrosse.

Jessica has served as Deputy Commissioner and Executive Vice President of Business Affairs at NLL, where her work was associated to look after the strategic directions on the initiatives of growth and legal matters of NLL. Among her areas of responsibility, Berman has served her positions while looking for overseas human resources, team services, community engagement, governance of the League, and Lacrosse Operations. Back in 2019, she was hired as the Deputy Commissioner of the men’s professional sports league, where she became the first lady to represent the position.
Previous to these positions, Berman has worked as the Vice President of the NHL Foundation. Despite this, she was also working at the level of community development, culture & growth at the National Hockey League, where her work was associated with taking the responsibilities of social goals, initiative, policies, and programs making in the area of League, NHL club, hockey community general and the NHL’s business partners. She worked to increase the inclusiveness, accessibility and raising of a community-friendly environment as a whole. Her work was to reduce the barriers to the game of hockey with a strong emphasis on the skills and positive values being learned through sports.

Ms. Berman has also handled the responsibilities of Vice President & Deputy General Counsel for the NHL. Before getting herself involved in the field of NHL, Jessica was an Associate in the Labor & Employment Department at Proskauer Rose LLP. At the company, she was supposed to handle the collective bargaining, mediations, litigations, and arbitrations. Meanwhile, during her tenure with Proskauer Rose, Jessica also worked on certain other additional responsibilities including domestic violence, sexual assaults, and military services.
Jessica has remained the part of lecturers and the related body, where she has handled lecturing on the posts league, operations and businesses, social impact, diversity & inclusion, labor law, immigration law in sports, and other breaking areas of the sports industry. She remained an active contender for the University of Michigan, where she has served on the alumni board of the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology.
