Elena Branson, aka Elena Chernykh, was born in 1961 in the Soviet Union, and later emigrated to the United States in 1991, according to the complaint gathered from the Government. Then, she was permitted to open Russian Center New York in Manhattan back in 2012. The Moscow government granted the permission and authorized Elena Branson to directly task herself for the Russian officials to arrange events and public messaging. She was nominated as the chairperson of the Russian Community Council of the United States (previously known as Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots), but, following the FBI investigations the group was terminated back in 2021.
Arrest
The 61-year-old woman, Elena, has been accused of helping to organize the “I Love Russia” campaign, being operated illegally as a Russian Government agent and conducting business in the United States for almost a decade. Elena Branson, who is a dual US-Russian Citizen, was accused of the charges on 8th March 2022 for operating as a foreign government agent without any proper notice to the US government. Despite this, she has also been charged with the conduct of fraud with VISAs and lying to the FBI, and failing to register herself as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Following the FBI investigation, the group ceased operations in 2021.
Previously, while being in the position of a government agent, she conducted coordinating meetings between the US elected officials and Russian officials. On the other hand, according to the Justice Department, Branson claimed that she was never approached by the Russian officials back in 2020 for the conduction of meetings with US executives. But according to the complaints, the FBI agent seized 34 electronic devices (including 11 cell phones) from the headquarters of the Russian Center New York in Manhattan. Moreover, the announcement of all these charges was made public after hours when President Joe Biden announced the ban of energy imports from Moscow due to their involvement with the Ukraine war.
