Victor and Phyllis E. Grann welcomed David into the world on March 10, 1967. His mother was the first woman to lead a significant publishing company, having served as the previous CEO of Putnam Penguin. The director of the Bennett Cancer Centre in Stamford, Connecticut, is his father, an oncologist.
Grann has two siblings, Edward and Alison. Grann earned a B.A. in government from Connecticut College in 1989. David started his career as a freelance writer while still in college. He did research there thanks to a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. He also possesses a master’s degree in international affairs from Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, earned in 1993.
