Christopher Meloni, also known as Christopher Peter Meloni is an American actor who gained a reputation for playing versatile and great performances in various dramas and movies. His most appreciated roles were as a retired NYPD detective in NBC’s law and order: special crimes unit and as Chris Keller in prison drama Oz.
Early life
Chris was born to Charles Robert Meloni and Cecile Meloni on 2nd April 1961 in Washington DC. He is currently 60 years old roman catholic. He grew up in the town with his two siblings, brother Robert and sister Michele, and is the youngest in his family. His father belonged to Italian ancestry and worked as a renowned endocrinologist. His mother Cecile was a homemaker and belonged to French Canadian ancestry. Chris completed his school education at St Stephen’s School (now known as St Stephens and St Agnes School) in Alexandria, Virginia.
He was interested and skilled at football and was also part of his school’s football team where he played at quarterback. Chris later went on to pursue his college education from the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated in the year 1983 with a degree in history. He was always interested in theatre and drama since childhood and went on to pursue his qualification in drama and theatrical arts with Sanford Meisner at the neighborhood playhouse school of theatre and center for media and arts. Chris rose to popularity with his role as a bisexual criminal Chris Keller in the HBO series OZ during the years 1993 to 2003 till the show went off the air.

Alongside he bagged the role of a retired detective Elliot Stabler in the series law and order: special crimes unit in 1999. His performance in the series has been most appreciated and gained him a nomination for his performance at the Emmy awards 2006 for outstanding lead actor in drama series. He ended his contract with the show in 2011 but recently reappeared in the same role in the spin-off series, law and order organized crime in 2020.
Meanwhile, he also appeared in various other roles over the years. In 2001 he appeared as Gene in we hot American summer, as doctor Norris in an episode of scrubs in 2003, and other cameo roles like in Harold and Kumar go to white castle. Meloni played the role of the green lantern in the Dc universe movie Green lantern: first flight. In 2012 he joined the cast of True Blood in the fifth season as a roman 500 years old vampire, head of vampire authority. He also appeared in the supporting role of colonel hardy in the movie Man of steel. “They came together “and “call of duty: black ops III” were some other movies he starred in. In 2017, Meloni also entered into producing with a sci-fi series Happy! In which he also starred in the lead role but the show was canceled soon in 2019.
Philanthropy
Meloni highly indulged in philanthropic work over the years. He has constantly been voicing for the rights of LGBTQ communities and was also awarded the Human rights campaign Equality award for his work on behalf of LGBTQ communities in 2006. Chris also appeared in the campaign video “New Yorkers for marriage equality.” of the Human rights campaign. He also played at Bravo’s celebrity poker showdown in the fourth and eighth series for the cause Feed the children. Meloni donated his prize money of $50000 and $25000that he won at Celebrity jeopardy and Million-dollar celebrity.

Chris married his wife Doris Sherman who is a production designer in July 1995. He has two children with his wife. His daughter Sophia Eva Meloni was born in 2001 and he later had his don, Dante Amadeo Meloni, in 2004. He is known to be a distant relative of Nancy Pelosi, an American politician. He is close friends with Mariska Hargitay who co-starred with him in the series Law and order. Meloni bought the house previously used for shooting adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in 2014. Chris has a crucifixion of Christ tattooed on his left arm and a butterfly tattoo on his left thigh and is known to have a few more.
