Chase Burns is an American college baseball pitcher for the Tennessee Volunteers. He felt at home in Tennessee, both professionally and culturally, and made the decision to relocate there. He was ranked as Perfect Game’s No. 17 overall high school talent and Tennessee’s No. 1 player.

Chase was regarded as the fifth-best right-handed pitcher in the country by Perfect Game and the 42nd-best prospect in the country by Prep Baseball Report. He was selected for the Perfect Game 2020 National Showcase Top Prospect Team.

Early Life

Chase Burns was born on January 16th, 2003 in Naples, Italy, but currently living in Gallatin, Tennessee. He is the son of Trinetti and David Burns, and he has one older sister, Breanna Burns. His dad, David, was a star quarterback for Division II North Greenville University.

Burns went to Station Camp High School, his alma mater, in his hometown of Gallatin, Tennessee. Before starting his senior year, he transferred to Beech Senior High School. In the 20th round of the 2021 MLB draft, the San Diego Padres picked Burns. However, Burns did not end up signing with the Padres.

When Burns first arrived in Tennessee, he was given a starting role with the Volunteers. His final season numbers were 8-2, 2.91 ERA, 103 Ks, and 81 1/3 IP thrown. At the end of the season, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association selected Burns Freshman Pitcher of the Year.

Against Georgia on 5/12, he made his professional relief debut, going 1.2 innings while striking out three. He struck out four over four innings against Kentucky and nine over five innings against Auburn.

When he made his first SEC start on the road against Ole Miss, he tossed a career-high seven innings and struck out a career-high 11 batters. When he made his first SEC start against South Carolina, he threw 6.2 innings and struck out nine batters.

He struck out six batters in five innings against Rhode Island for his third-season victory, and he struck out a career-high 10 batters in five innings against Texas. He got his second win of the season after going five innings against Iona and striking out four while allowing no earned runs.

Rise to Fame

Starting in the first game of the season-opening series against Georgia Southern, he racked up five strikeouts in five innings of work and earned his first collegiate victory. With 105 strikeouts so far this season, he has recorded 100+ strikeouts in consecutive seasons for the first time in his career. His 14.3 K/9 is third in the country and second in the SEC.

Tennessee advanced to the 2023 College World Series thanks to his 2.2 innings of relief work in the seventh inning of the NCAA Hattiesburg Super Regional final against #9 Southern Miss (6/12). His fastball reached 102 miles per hour during the final strikeout of the inning.

Game 2 of the NCAA Hattiesburg Super Regional was a shutout, and he finished it off with just six pitches. In the first game of the series on 4/27, he relieved for 2.1 innings, struck out four batters, and allowed only one hit against Mississippi State to earn the win.

After coming out of the bullpen for the first time this season and being incredible in the series opener against #2 Vanderbilt, going three innings, striking out seven, and allowing just one baserunner in an extra-innings thriller where he earned the victory, he nailed down the series finale against the Commodores by pitching a clean ninth inning and tallying one strikeout.

On the road against Grand Canyon, he made his 2023 debut in the MLB Desert Invitational, striking out six over 4.2 innings while allowing just three hits and zero earned runs. After surrendering two runs, he was benched and did not play a role in the final outcome.
