Anthony DeSclafani is an American professional baseball starter for the San Francisco Giants in Major League Baseball (MLB). He has been on the rosters of the Miami Marlins and Cincinnati Reds. He played baseball in college for the University of Florida. The Toronto Blue Jays picked DeSclafani in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB draft. His first season in the Major Leagues was in 2014.

Anthony DeSclafani was born on April 18, 1990, in Freehold Borough, New Jersey. DeSclafani grew up in Howell Township, New Jersey, and graduated from Colts Neck High School in the same town.

DeSclafani was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft by the Boston Red Sox. Despite being offered a signing bonus of around $200,000, he opted to attend the University of Florida and play college baseball for the Florida Gators instead. While attending college in 2010, he spent his summers playing baseball for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

DeSclafani was drafted in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was given a signing bonus of $250,000. In 2012, he was a pitcher for the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League’s Class A.
The Blue Jays sent DeSclafani, Adeiny Hechavarria, Henderson lvarez, Yunel Escobar, Jeff Mathis, Justin Nicolino, and Jake Marisnick to the Marlins after the 2012 season. In return, they received Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, José Reyes, John Buck, and Emilio Bonifacio.
DeSclafani threw for the Class A-Advanced Florida State League’s Jupiter Hammerheads and the Class AA Southern League’s Jacksonville Suns in 2013. He had a combined 9 wins, 6 losses, and a 2.65 ERA between the two levels. The Miami Marlins recognized him as their best minor league pitcher following the season.
Anthony was a member of Jacksonville’s opening-day roster in 2014. On May 14 against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, the Marlins called him up and he won his first major league game. DeSclafani had two hits and seven strikeouts. DeSclafani was sent back to the New Orleans Zephyrs of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League on August 16, 2014, when Henderson Alvarez came back.
Anthony was ejected for the first time in his Major League Baseball career on September 11, 2014, after he hit Milwaukee Brewers batter Carlos Gómez with a pitch. The MLB announced DeSclafani’s three-game suspension and unknown punishment the following day. The Marlins sent DeSclafani and Chad Wallach to the Reds on December 11, 2014, in exchange for Mat Latos.
Rise to Fame
It was DeSclafani’s 3-2 victory over the Cubs on April 14, 2015, that marked the Reds’ first victory of the year and their first victory by a starting pitcher. He made 31 starts for the Reds and ended with a 9-13 record. The following year, he made just 20 starts due to multiple trips to the injured list, but he still managed a 9-5 record.
DeSclafani’s right elbow hurt at the start of spring training in 2017. He was shut down after a diagnosis of tendinitis. He started the year on the injured list after injuring the UCL in his elbow, as was later determined. After sending him on a minor league rehab assignment at the end of July, his tendinitis flared up again and cut his assignment short. Recovery of his UCL had occurred. With his placement on MLB’s 60-day injured list, his season was virtually over before it even began.
DeSclafani was activated to start on June 5, 2018, against the Colorado Rockies, after being sidelined for over two years due to several injuries. During a June 23 game against the Chicago Cubs, DeSclafani hit a grand slam off of Brian Duensing. The last Reds reliever to hit a grand slam was Bob Purkey, who did it against the Cubs in 1959. DeSclafani started for the Reds and got the win as they beat the Cubs 11-2.
