Paul Mescal is an Irish actor who is currently seen as a lead in the Irish drama television series Normal People for BBC Three and Hulu based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Sally Rooney. He has earned a Primetime Emmy Award in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his role as Connell Waldron. He is currently represented by Creative Artists Agency based in Los Angeles, United States.
Early Life
Paul Mescal was born on 2nd February 1996 in Maynooth, County Kildare, the Republic of Ireland to mother Dearblha and father Paul. His mother worked as a police officer or also known as Garda and his father was a school teacher who also was involved in acting semi-professionally. Paul has a younger sister named Nell Mescal who is a singer and a brother named Donnacha Mescal.
He is also often seen as a family person, as he is always seen uploading pictures with his family on social media and recently even paid tribute to his grandparents on their anniversary. In 2017 he graduated with a Bachelor of Art from The Lir Academy, a drama school based in Dublin, Ireland. Growing up he was very fond of playing football and was also an under-21 footballer playing as a defender for Kildare and a member of Maynooth GAA, however, he gave up football after having a jaw injury.
Paul Mescal Career
Paul soon after graduating from The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin, was offered roles in two theatre productions namely Angeles’ Ashes and The Great Gatsby in 2017. Later that year he also appeared in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red Shoes at the Gate Theatre in Dublin. In 2018, due to his outstanding acting skills, Mescal became very famous on the streets of Dublin as he landed the role of Lieutenant Langon in The Plough and the Stars. Subsequently, he was also featured in the premiere of Asking for It by Louise O’Neill as Bryan at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. The same year he also appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, playing the role of Demetrius at Kilkenny Arts Festival and then as Stephen Dedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man at Dublin Theatre Festival.
Apart from theatre, Paul was cast as Matt Leary in the television series Bump in 2019, and later enough in 2020, he was seen playing the lead role of Connell Waldron in the miniseries Normal People alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones which can be said to be a breakthrough in Mescal’s acting career. For this particular role, Paul was nominated at the TV Choice Awards for Best Actor. He also became the recipient of Breakthrough Performer of the Year and Limited/Movie Actor Gold Derby TV Awards. Paul has also featured in a few music videos such as Scarlet by The Rolling Stones and Savior Complex by Phoebe Bridgers both in the year 2020. Later he was cast as Cian in the short film, Drifting, and played the main role of Sean McKeogh in the miniseries The Deceived.
