Extremely well known for being the two-times Olympic gold medalist, Carli Lloyd is an American soccer player. Even now a decade later from her debut, she is an incredible player and is one of the main players in the USNWT (Unites State Nation Women’s Team). Early Life
Carli Anne Lloyd was born on July 16, 1982, in Delran Township, New Jersey. Her parents were Pamela and Stephen Lloyd. She was raised in Delran Township, a small community. She has a brother named Stephen and a sister, Ashley. At the age of 5, she started playing soccer. She attended Delran high school and graduated from there in 2000. She played soccer there and was known for her exceptional skill in the field. Her coach was “The Red Baron” Klobach.
In her senior year, she scored 26 goals and served eight assists. She also was the captain of her team and was named the CourierPost player of the year in 2000 and the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association Midfielder of the Year. Carli attended Rutgers University and graduated from there in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Sports Studies. She played for the Scarlet Knights women’s soccer team. Lloyd became the first Rutgers player to earn Big East Rookie of the Year honors. In 2004, she was named the Big East Midfielder of the Year.
Carli Lloyd Career
She started her career playing for W-League teams in the Central Jersey Splash in 1999 and then New Brunswick Power in 2000. Carli then became a member of the National team of the United States of America and they successfully won the Nordic Cup from 2002 to 2005. She considered quitting the sport after being cut from the team once but she met James Galanis, a local coach who said that she needed to develop her fitness and mental toughness.
She trained herself harder and she made it into the US senior team, which became her first international appearance. In 2005 she made her first international debut against Ukraine. Although, it took more than a year to score an International Goal which came on 1st October 2006 against Taiwan. Carli made her debut in FIFA World Cup 2007 against North Korea which resulted in a 2-2 draw. At the end of the world cup, she finished as the third most valuable player in the team with 9 goals and 3 assists.
Rise to Stardom
She established herself strongly and cemented it with her lone goal to victory at the 2008 Olympics over Japan. She was then named US Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. In 2009, she played for the Chicago Red Stars of the Women’s Professional Soccer league. Before the 2012 Olympics, she was demoted to a backup role. But she made the starting line-up when a teammate was injured and she scored both US goals, leading it to the gold medal.
In the 2015 World Cup, she again became the main lead. It was her goals that gave the US its victory. In 2016, she and her team lost at the Rio Olympics. After this loss, her next win was at the 2017 FIFA. In 2017, she joined Manchester City. By 2019, she became a backup on the national team but she still scored three goals, pushing the US to their second place at the World Cup. She is still a mainstay for the US National Team even after 16 years from her debut. Along with playing, she also published a memoir ‘When Nobody Was Watching’, in 2016.
