Vera Pauw is a Dutch football coach and former goalkeeper who currently manages the Republic of Ireland women’s national team. She is currently taking charge of her team in the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Canada. She led Ireland to a place in the knockout stage for the first time with Pauw widely regarded as the world’s most influential and successful women’s soccer coach of the project was supervised.
Early life
Vera Pauw was born on January 18, 1963, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She began playing street soccer with her brothers and joined the first women’s team at the age of 13. Vera became manager of the Netherlands women’s national team in 1983 and played 89 international matches until 1998.
She also played professionally in Italy for Modena, becoming the first Dutch woman to manage a football team playing abroad. She later returned to the Netherlands and moved to Puck Deventer, S.V.
Vera Pauw Career
Pauw was appointed coach and technical director of Scotland in 1998. She left in a similar role with her home country in 2004, taking them to the semi-finals of UEFA Women’s Euro 2009 on an interim basis in 2011. In 2014 she served as the Technical Director of Russian Women’s Football when she moved to South Africa as their head coach.
She coached at the Olympics for the first time in 2016 and then retired. In 2018, Pauw joined the National Women’s Soccer League as head coach of the Houston Dash but left after one season. She was recruited by the Republic of Ireland in 2019, where she achieved impressive results, such as qualifying for their first World Cup and reaching the last 16.

Pauw is married to Bert van Lingen, a former assistant manager of Glasgow Rangers and the Netherlands men’s national team. Bert is 17 years younger than her and he used to coach the team in which she was a player. They both fell in love after some time and Bert left coaching.
