Uju Anya is an assistant professor of Second Language Learning, Department of Curriculum & Instruction Research Affiliate in critical applied linguistics, critical sociolinguistics, new language learning, and critical race and discourse studies. Uju Anya was born in Nigeria on August 4, 1977. At the age of 10, she, along with her mother and brother, moved to the United States. Her mother walked out of her marriage because of Uju’s father’s extramarital affairs and took two of the children to America. Uju joined the private Ivy League research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth College to graduate in Romance Languages in 1998. Uju has a vast career history being a researcher and a professor. She started her teaching profession in 1998 by teaching at Phillips Academy Andover where she taught Spanish. Then in 2001, she was a visiting Portuguese lecturer at Dartmouth College Department of Spanish and Portuguese. From 2003 to 2005, she designed and taught English and Portuguese as a Master’s Teacher at Rassias Center for World Languages and Cultures before joining the UCLA Department of Applied Linguistics as applied linguistics and English lecturer in 2008. She worked there for four years after which she was appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Education at Rossier School of Education at The University of Southern California (2012-2016)
In the 2003 Summer, she also worked as the visiting Assistant Professor & Director at Dartmouth College Department of Spanish and Portuguese. There, she led 18 students in study and homestay programs to learn Portuguese. Since 2016, she has been an Assistant Professor of Second Language Learning, Department of Curriculum & Instruction Research Affiliate, at The College of Education at Pennsylvania State University. As a researcher, she received various grants. She was awarded Principal Investigator several times. She also received grants as a Co-Investigator and Expert Consultant.
Uju has received many honors and awards starting in 1998, she received Phillips Academy Andover Spanish Teaching Fellowship. In 1999, she was awarded the Irene Diamond Fellowship for Graduate Study at Brown University. At UCLA, she received Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship for Doctoral Studies in 2007. A year later, she got the Centro Latino for Literacy Manos Amigas Volunteer of the Year Award. The most recent award she received is the 2020 Penn State College of Education Outstanding Teaching Award. In 2019, she was awarded two awards —American Association for Applied Linguistics First Book Award and ACTFL/Middlebury Research Forum Invited Scholar.
