Suella Braverman Biography

Suella Braverman, in full, Sue-Ellen Cassiana “Suella” Braverman is a Britain politician and barrister and has held the position of the Attorney General for England and Wales since 2020. She also held the position of Member of Parliament (MP) for Fareham since 2015. She is a member of the conservative party and also chaired the European Research Group (ERG) from 19 June 2017 to 9 January 2018. Amid the immediate resignation of Boris Johnson due to political tension in UK politics, Suella is probably one of the best contenders to replace him as the next British Prime Minister.

Early Life

Suella Braverman is 42 years old and her parents’ names are Christie and Uma Fernandes, where both had Indian origins and later got settled in Britain in 1960 from Kenya and Mauritius. Her mother was a working woman and held the position of a nurse and a counselor in Brent. Her father belongs to Goan ancestry from South India and worked for a housing association during his time. Suella was born in Harrow, Greater London, and was later brought up in Wembley.

Braverman went to Uxendon Manor Primary School in Brent and gained a partial scholarship that led her to the fee-paying Heathfield School, Pinner. When she was still studying, she chaired the Cambridge University Conservative Association. She lived in France for two years and stayed there as an Erasmus Programme student and then became an Entente Cordiale Scholar and then had her journey toward the completion of her master’s degree in European and French Law at Pantheon-Sorbonne University.

Conservative Candidate

In the 2005 general elections, Braverman appeared for the position and contested Leicester East while finishing in second place. She also sought elections to the London Assembly at the 2012 Assembly elections, where she earned 4th place on the conservative London-wide list.

Parliamentary Positions

Braverman was given the position of MP for Fareham in 2015 after she earned 56.1% of the votes with a majority of 22,262. She gave her maiden speech and immediately held the command of education, home affairs, and justice and has written many articles for the media companies like The Daily Telegraph, Bright Blue, i-News, HuffPost, Brexit Central, and ConservativeHome. From 2015 to 2017, Braverman held the position of member of the Education Select Committee.

Between November 2015 and February 2016, she was appointed as a member of the Joint Committee on the Draft Investigatory Power Bill. At the time of the January 2018 reshuffle, Braverman held the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, from which she resigned on 15th November 2018 on the same day when Davis’ successor, Dominic Raab, resigned from his position of Brexit Secretary against the protest at Theresa May and Olly Robbins’s draft Brexit deal, which was finalized the day before the resignation.

Attorney General Position

On the day of the 13th February 2020 reshuffle, Braverman was given the position of Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland after Geoffrey Cox was dismissed from the government. With the achievement of the position, Braverman became the second female attorney general and the first conservative female attorney general. However, she was criticized by the members of the Bar Council and was blamed for her poor choice of role.
