Shauna Coxsey is a British professional rock climbing athlete as well as an Olympian. She has represented her country at various international levels and become one of the most loved and respected athletes in her country. She retired recently in 2021 and also holds the Most Excellent honor of the British Empire for her contribution.

Early Life

Shauna was born on 27th January 1993 in Runcorn, the UK to her white Christian parents. She grew up in her hometown as a single child and started rock climbing early on at the age of four. She decided to become a rock climber after she saw the television broadcast of Catherine Destivelle. Shauna has not shared any detail about her early education or qualification but is believed to be a high school graduate. She is also believed to have attended some college and is known to have received formal training in rock climbing.

Shauna started her professional career in 2012 when she started taking part in competitions both internationally as well as nationally. She won her first British bouldering championship in 2012 and the same year she also won the 2012 Melloblocco world cup. She further recorded a bronze in the 2012 bouldering world cup. The following year, she was appointed as the 1st ambassador for the British Mountaineering Council and also won the British bouldering championship and The CWIF the same year. In the next few years, she continued recording international wins and secured several golds at bouldering cups like The CWIF, British Championships, World cup as well as La Sportiva legends only. She also won the IFSC bouldering world cup in 2016 and 2017.

In 2014, she became the third woman ever to boulder 8B+ and was appointed Member of the Order of British Empire in 2016. She also competed in the 2019 IFSC climbing world championship and won two bronze and also set a new record for speed climbing. Shauna later qualified to represent her country at the 2020 Olympics. She retired from the sport in the year 2021due to her pregnancy and competed for the last time at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which were organized in 2021 due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
