Reese Olson is a professional baseball pitcher from the United States who now works for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). In 2023, he debuted in Major League Baseball.

During the 2022 minor league season, he struck out 168 times, tying a career-high. By the end of the 2022 season, he had risen through the Tigers’ minor league ranks to become their ninth-best MLB prospect.

Reese Olson was born on July 31, 1999, in Gainesville, Georgia and his parents are Lee and Kelly Olson. Reese grew up with his brother and went on to attend North Hall High School. He got his start in the pros with the Arizona League Brewers. He made four appearances on the mound for the squad before being upgraded.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected him in the 13th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. Olson went 4-7 with a 4.66 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 94 innings this year for the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

He made 14 starts. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the 2020 minor league season was canceled, so he did not play in any games. In 2021, Olson made 14 starts for the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and finished with a 5-4 record, 4.30 ERA, 79 strikeouts over 69 innings, and a.209 opponent batting average.

Detroit Tigers

Olson was shipped to the Detroit Tigers on 7/31/2021 in exchange for a player named Daniel Norris. He was sent to the West Michigan Whitecaps of the High-A Midwest League. According to MLB.com’s mid-season 2021 rankings, he is the thirteenth top prospect in the organization.

Olson played for the 2022 season throughout the entirety of Double-A with the Erie Sea Wolves. He made 26 appearances (25 starts) and finished with an 8-6 record, 4.14 ERA, 168 Ks, and 119 2/3 IP. He was recognized as the top defensive pitcher in the minor leagues and awarded the 2022 MiLB Gold Glove. Olson began the 2023 season with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.

He had a 6.38 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings over 10 starts. The Tigers announced Olson’s first-ever call-up to the majors on May 31, with the intention of having him make his debut two days later against the Chicago White Sox. Olson allowed 2 hits and 2 earned runs in 5 innings of his debut major league start, but he also struck out 6. The Tigers scored no runs, and he was given the loss.
