Olivia Cooke is an English actress. She is known for her role in the A&E drama-thriller series “Bates Motel” playing the character of Emma Decody, her first American role. Cooke has since been mistaken to be American. She has played notable roles in various films since the start of her career and bagged various awards for her different roles. Several of her films have been premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and at Sundance Film Festival.

Olivia Cooke born as Olivia Kate Cooke was born in Oldham, a former textile manufacturing town in Greater Manchester, North West England on 27 December 1993 to Lindsy Wild (mother) who is a sales representative, and John Cooke (father) who is a retired police officer. She comes from a family of non-actors. She has a younger sister named Eleanor. Her parents separated when she was a child, and she and her younger sister lived with their mother.

Cooke went to Royton and Crompton Secondary School and studied drama at Oldham Sixth Form College, leaving before the end of her A-levels to star in Blackout. Cooke practiced ballet and gymnastics from a young age. At the age of 8, she started acting at an after-school drama program in her hometown, called the Oldham Theatre Workshop.

Olivia began her professional journey in 2012. Where Cooke staged for the Oldham Theatre Workshop when she starred as Maria in Oldham Sixth Form College’s production of West Side Story. Next, she got her first and last leading role for the Oldham Theatre, in Prom: The Musical, a remake of Cinderella. After she left the Oldham Theatre Workshop she got herself a casting director called Beverley Keogh who used to secure roles for her in television. Despite being a neophyte, Cooke distinguished herself in the demanding casting process for The Quiet Ones, which opened in April 2014, two years after filming took place.

Cooke shaved off her hair to play the female lead who battles leukemia in the comedy-drama film “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”. The film was awarded both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the Sundance Film Festival. Later Cooke bagged a role alongside Christopher Abbott, Mary Steenburgen, and others. In the independent drama film Katie Says Goodbye. Her next project was the film adaptation of Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem, a gothic murder mystery, opposite Bill Nighy and Douglas Booth. Both of these films premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Also, she starred in the thriller film Thoroughbreds which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

Rise to Fame

In March 2018, Cooke was seen in Steven Spielberg’s science fiction adventure Ready Player One in which she played the role of Art3mis. Later that year, she appeared in Dan Fogelman’s relationship drama film Life Itself alongside Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, and Samuel L. Jackson. In 2019, Her drama film Sound of Metal, alongside Riz Ahmed premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Also in 2019, she featured in the Prime Video romantic comedy anthology series “Modern Love” and played the character of Karla, a pregnant homeless woman giving her baby up for adoption.

In 2021 she is all set to appear in two back-to-back movies. One of her movies called “The Little Fish” directed by Chad Hartigan is an American sci-fi film. She will be seen alongside Jack O’Connell, Raúl Castillo, and Soko in the science fiction film. Another project of her is the directorial debut film of Chase Palmer called Naked Singularity. The movie stars John Boyega, Bill Skarsgård, Ed Skrein, Linda Lavin, and Tim Blake Nelson along with Olivia Cooke.
