Nick Martinez Biography

Nick Martinez is a professional baseball pitcher from the United States. He is currently a member of the San Diego Padres team in Major League Baseball (MLB). Still, he has also played for the Texas Rangers, the San Diego Padres, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). At Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y., he spent three seasons as a second baseman, hitting .295 with four home runs and 66 RBI. Nick was the first Fordham player to make it to the majors since RHP Pete Harnisch in 2001.

Nick Martinez, whose parents are Nick Martinez Sr. and Annie Martinez, was born on August 5, 1990, in Miami, Florida. Before joining the majors, he played baseball at Belen Jesuit Prep in Miami, Fla. (he graduated in 2008).

Nick is also a one-time Olympian, winning a silver medal with Team USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Martinez attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, Florida, and subsequently joined Fordham University, where he participated in baseball. As a relief pitcher, he appeared in 15 games over two seasons and had a 1-3 record with a 5.33 ERA. However, Martinez spent most of his time on the field as a second baseman, where he was a productive player. Over three seasons and 148 games, he batted .295 with 4 home runs, 66 runs, 167 hits, and 22 stolen bases. He is the seventh Mountaineer to reach Major League Baseball (MLB) and the 34th alumnus from Fordham University.

Texas Rangers

In the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, Nick was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 18th round from Fordham University. His professional career began with the AZL Rangers, and he played for the Low-A Spokane Indians, tallying a combined ERA of 2.75 over 10 games.

On March 26, 2014, Martinez was designated as the fifth starter for the Rangers. He was officially added to the 40-man roster on April 5 and made his major league debut. During his inaugural start against the Tampa Bay Rays, Martinez pitched for six innings, recording three strikeouts and conceding three earned runs on four hits.

Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters
