Mubarak Bala is a Nigerian personality, who was born in Kano State back in 1984. He is well known as an atheist and is a respected member of the humanist movement. He has received his training in chemical engineering and is also serving as the president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria. Despite this, he is a recipient of Humanist Society Scotland’s Gordon Ross Humanist of the Year Award, which he received on 8th January 2021.
Mubarak Bala Early Life
Mubarak Bala was born on 11th July 1984 in Kano, Nigeria. His father (Muhammad Bala) is a former senior member of the Islamic religious authorities. Bala had a tragic time in the psychiatric ward. However, he was released shortly after because of the strike at the hospital, and because of this many other patients saw the discharge. Following his release, Bala reported that he was receiving death threats. On 4th July 2014, it was reported by BBC that Bala had been released from the hospital and he got the chance because of the ongoing strike in the hospital. It was also reported that he was receiving reconciliation with his family.
After he started receiving death threats, he still decided to live in Nigeria, where he became the president of an organization called the Nigerian Humanists. In June 2014 at the age of 30, Bala was held in a psychiatric ward (that was of course without his will) for at least 18 days. He was admitted to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano, Northern Nigeria. He received the treatment only because he declared himself that he was an atheist openly.
Controversy
The International Humanist and Ethical Union came forward to take up the case of Mubarak Bala. The organization feels that his rights were violated. The organization also proposed that Bala received this inhumane action because he renounced Islam culture and declared himself to be an atheist openly. In April 2020, he was arrested in Kaduna for blasphemy, where he was charged with the comments he made on Facebook. But, later he was held without charge. Mubarak faced many threats to death because of which he was allegedly transferred by the police from Kaduna to Kano and after that his safety came into question. On the other hand, Leo Igwe has been working hard to fight for his rights.
He has been working with numerous atheist, and humanist organizations and notably Humanism International and Atheist Alliance International. Also, the newly formed organization IAA (International Association of Atheists) joined the force to speak up against the rights, awareness, and funds to help and pay Mubarak’s legal costs. Also, USCIRF- the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom- took an interest in the case of Mubarak Bala and started putting pressure on the Nigerian government for his rights and public awareness. On 5th April 2022, Mubarak was given a life sentence in prison. The decision was submitted by the high court in the Northern State of Kano, where Mubarak pled guilty to all 24 charges, so, he was given a sentence of 24 years in prison.
