Mike Watkiss is a well-known journalist who produced the Emmy and Edward R. Murrow award-winning documentary “Colorado City and the Underground Railroad.” In the Phoenix news business, he is one of the most colorful characters.

Early Life

Mike Watkiss was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA on 26th October 1957. His parents are David. K . Watkiss, who is a prominent Utah trial attorney with connections to a democratic political party, and Dorthy Watkiss, a housewife. He is his parents’ third child. All his siblings followed his dad’s profession with only Mike being the odd one out. Watkiss had always been good in academics. He completed his schooling in his hometown. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Stanford in 1980 and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1984.

Mike Watkiss Career

After completing his masters, Watkiss enjoyed an eight-year run on the syndicated TV show “A Current Affair.”  During his “A Current Affair” years, Watkiss covered such headline-making stories as The riots in Los Angeles, the explosion in Oklahoma City, the assassination of “Night Stalker” Richard Ramirez, and the Tonya Harding affair. He has covered major events for 3TV, including 9/11, Princess Diana’s death, and the Timothy McVeigh trial. Watkiss was performing a freelance piece for the TV show “Hard Copy” before joining 3TV, which concluded with him getting punched on camera.

Watkiss has also been an investigating reporter at KTVK Channel 3 for more than 20 years. He has announced that he’s retiring from Channel 3 (KTVK) and Channel 5 (KPHO).  When asked about his post-retirement plans, he says his plans include finishing the book — he’s written 200 pages — and acting. He has no wish to work in another television market and intends to stay in Phoenix.
