Maks Levin Biography

Maks Levin was a Ukrainian personality who was famously known for photographing the war and destruction pictures. He was a photojournalist and has been in the working position since 2006. It is known that he had worked with LB.ua and Reuters among the various companies he tied hands with. Despite working on the photographs in the line of journalism, he also used to work on the photographs of humanitarian organizations like UNICEF and WHO. He went on a mission in Ukraine during the time of war between Russia and Ukraine and was supposed to click the war images but the news came to the organization that he was interrogated to be dead. According to the reports by Reporters Without Borders, it is said that Levin was killed by the Russian soldiers after possibly interrogating and torturing the man.

Early Life

Maks Levin was born on 7th July 1981, making him 40 years old at the time of his death. He was a keen lover of photography and eagerly wanted to become one since his childhood. He also used to attend the photography club in the school during his teenage years. But he received his education at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, where he was trained to be a computer system engineer and eventually he became the one that his father wished for.

Maks Levin Career

Although it is not known how Levin began working in photography because his father always wanted him to become a computer engineer, he probably started working as a photojournalist back in 2006. He worked as a staff photographer for LB.ua and also as a stringer for Reuters. Among the various working profiles, he has worked notably with BBC, TRT World, Associated Press, and many others. Levin had his photographs published by various platforms and media companies like Radio Bulgaria, The Wall Street Journal, The Moscow Times, Ukraine Crisis Media Center, Time, World News Media, and many others.

He also used to work on the photographs and the video conduction out of those photographs for the humanitarian organizations like UNFPA, Health Right International, United Nations, UNICEF, OSCE, WHO, UN Women, and the Organization for Security. Levin was the man behind witnessing the various wars and destructions behind the Russian-Ukrainian War back in 2014 and during the Battle of Ilovaisk. Thankfully, he was able to come alive out of the war and able to depict the pictures through his photography, and eventually, he earned the honor- the Order “For Merits” of the III degree- by the honorable president Petro Poroshenko in 2015.+

Death

While working for the project in Kyiv, Maks Levin went missing and his fellow photographer appeared to talk about his missing news along with another man named Oleksiy Chernyshov. It is said that both the personalities broke the connection afterward the day of missing. Finally, on 1st April 2022, the body of Levin was found near the village area and it was reported by the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office that he was shot two times by the Russian serviceman. During that time Levin was found to be wearing a press jacket and being unarmed. After his death, Levin was honored with the Order of Courage and a funeral was set in his name in Kyiv’s St. Michael’s Cathedral.
