Lamont Marcell Jacobs Jr. was born on September 26, 1994, in El Paso, Texas, to Viviana Masini, an Italian mother, and Lamont Marcell Jacobs Sr., an African American father. His father was a US Army soldier stationed in Italy at Caserma Ederle. Jacobs and his mother relocated to Desenzano del Garda when his father was sent to South Korea. At the age of 10, he began competing in sports there, initially favoring sprinting before discovering the long jump in 2011.

Jacobs won the long jump at the 2016 Italian Athletics Championships. According to his personal best, he was tenth on the IAAF world-leading list for the long jump at the end of the 2017 indoor season, with a personal best of 8.07 metres. At the 2016 Italian U23 Championships, the jumper recorded a national record of 8.48 metres, the best performance ever by an Italian, albeit the result was not recognized as a national record due to a 2.8 metre per second tailwind (the maximum allowable wind speed for any record performance is 2.0 metres per second). He was the 150th individual to break the 10-second barrier in history.
He surpassed the old record with a timing of 10.01 seconds during the Italian Championships in Rovereto on June 26, 2021, despite the fact that the wind was blowing at 10.0 metres per second. At the time, he had just won his fourth national title in a row. He broke the previous Italian record in the first round with a 9.94; then, in the semi-finals, he finished third with a 9.84, shattering the previous European record and qualifying as the third overall qualifier for the final. As a result, he became the first Italian runner to achieve such a feat. With a final time of 9.80 seconds, he won the gold medal, setting a new European record, and became the fastest athlete from a country other than the United States or Jamaica.
