Kodai Senga Biography

Updated on:

Kodai Senga is a Japanese pitcher who is performing out of this world ever since his debut in April 2023. He competes in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Mets. He debuted in NPB in 2012 for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, where he remained a player through 2022. Kodai quickly rose to fame within a short period after making his debut in the Major League and he is destined to be a prodigy in the coming days.

Early Life

Kodai Senga was born on January 30, 1993, and was raised in Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture, where he began playing rubber-ball baseball as a third baseman until he graduated from middle school. The manager of the Gamagori High School baseball team convinced Senga that the quality of his throwing was better suited for the position of pitcher, so Senga changed positions.

Even though Senga and his team were unable to compete in the Japanese High School Baseball Championship or Japanese High School Baseball Invitational Tournament at Koshien Stadium, the owner of a sporting goods store in Nagoya recommended Senga to Kazuo Ogawa, the scout manager of the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks at the time, as a potential draftee.

Kodai Senga Career

The Fukuoka Softbank Hawks selected Senga, along with Takuya Kai and Taisei Makihara, as a member of their developmental squad on October 28, 2010, during the 2010 Nippon Professional Baseball draft. He participated in informal matches against Shikoku Island League Plus teams and amateur baseball teams from the 2011 season until the mid-2012 season, as well as in the Western League of NPB’s minor levels. He entered into a 4.4-million-yen deal as a registered player under management on April 23, 2012, with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.

Senga competed on behalf of the Japan national baseball team in the 2016 exhibition games against Mexico and the Netherlands in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. After the 2017 World Baseball Classic was over, he was selected for the 2017 All-World Baseball Classic squad. At the end of the 2017 season, he maintained a 13-4 record, a 2.64 ERA, 151 strikeouts in 143 innings, and was the 2017 Pacific League Winning percentage leader (.765).

Rise to Fame

He was chosen for the 2019 WBSC Premier12 on October 1, 2019. However, he decided against playing because of the wear and tear from the regular season. Senga tried unsuccessfully to convince the Hawks to post him to Major League Baseball teams in 2019. For the first time in 76 years on September 6, 2019, he pitched the second no-hitter for the Hawks.

A player has never before been selected in the developmental squad players draft. On July 5, 2021, he was chosen to represent Japan in baseball for the 2020 Summer Olympics. By defeating the United States in the championship game while giving up no runs in two games, he won the gold medal.
