Norley enlisted in the Army in 1998, motivated by her desire to serve her country after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She trained as a combat medic and a mental health specialist at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. She was deployed to Iraq in 2003 as part of the 1st Cavalry Division.

Kate met John Oliver in 2008 at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. John was covering the event for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, while Kate was there promoting Vets for Freedom.
