However, when she was 16 years old, she was involved in a car accident that left her with a severe head injury. She had to relearn how to read and write, and her mother helped her recover from the trauma. 

Kate graduated from high school in 1996 and enrolled at George Washington University. She studied international relations and political science, but she dropped out after two years to join the Army.

Norley enlisted in the Army in 1998, motivated by her desire to serve her country after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She trained as a combat medic and a mental health specialist at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. She was deployed to Iraq in 2003 as part of the 1st Cavalry Division.
