In July 2017, Karsten won a gold medal in the 400 m hurdles at the 2017 European U23 Championships, making a championship record of 48.37 s. He also won a silver medal in the 400 m with a new time holding a record of 45.75 s. In August, he won gold in the 400 m hurdles at the 2017 World Championships with a time of 48.35 s.
