Early Life
Xeana Kamalani Dung was born on March 4, 1997, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was born to parents Lance Dung and Honey Rodrigues and Lancen Dung is her younger brother. Dung studied at Kamehameha Schools and later attended the University of California, Berkeley to finish her additional coursework.
When she was just ten years old, Dung began playing competitive softball in Hawaii. She learned her unconventional style of pitching from videos posted on YouTube and is now a self-taught hurler. After coaches learned that she had never taken professional pitching training, she was dubbed the “YouTube” pitcher.

Dung was named to the 2017 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge All-Tournament Team after finishing 2-2 with a 2.90 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 19.1 innings, including the only no-hitter of the tournament and the first of her career. She made 44 game appearances, including 38 starts. She had a 26-15 record with 218 strikeouts in 254.1 innings while pitching 31 full games, including an MW-best nine shutouts.
Dung played her first NCAA game as a D1 college player on October 22, 2015, against the professional team USSSA Pride at the Margie Wright Diamond. In the 2016 campaign, Dung went on to establish herself as one of the two starting pitchers as a rookie, assisted her team in winning the Mountain West conference, and was a member of one of the most illustrious squads in MW history.
Rise to Fame
In addition to having a nation-leading 23-game winning run that year that broke a previous school record, Fresno State was placed 17 in RPI. Dung was unbeaten in conference play and made her maiden regional appearance and save.
She led the Golden Bears to their first top-25 wins since 2017 against No. 21 James Madison University and threw a one-hitter through the first five innings of an upset victory against No. 22 Arizona State University Sun Devils.
Dung delivered Cal its first top-5 win in a few years, pitching a gem and shutting out the No.5/No.1 Arizona Wildcats for the first time since 2012, stopping the Wildcats’ 21-game winning streak with one of the nation’s most potent home run hitting line-ups. Dung pitched a whole game against 0. 1 and eventual WCWS champion UCLA in March, allowing no earned runs and four hits.
With one run allowed and four strikeouts over five innings, Dung earned the Bear the victory over OSU. In a crucial 1-0 victory over Duke University on February 22, Dung struck out 12 batters while allowing only two hits, giving her national acclaim as one of the top 9 softball performances for that week.
