Jess Chanliau is a trans-identified non-binary bilingual American actor, singer, and movement artist. She advocates for equal gender and race representation in the film industry. Jess preferentially plays trans roles in plays and movies. Because of the trans identity, Jess preferred to be called they/their/them instead.
Early Life
Based on reports, Jess was born on 15th August 1990 to her mother Irish mother and French father. Jess grew up speaking English and French. For their middle and high school, Jess went to France. During their time there Jess also attended a Theatre School, Cours Florent. For the final year of high school, Jess flew back to California, USA, and joined the performing arts program at the Marin School of the Arts.
Jess did a BA in acting from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasglow, UK. Chanliau was an exchange artist from Scotland to France and performed at the Conservatoire National Supériuer d’Art Dramatique in Paris. Jess spent an entire year in Paris studying and performing. While studying in Europe Jess faced a lot of transphobias. They used to have trouble with the language as French is a very binary language.

Chanliau is a trained actor and started performing at a very young age. Jess spent years studying and performing in France, Paris, Scotland, Glasgow, and Santa Maria. In 2019 Jess played over 20 different characters in the play South Bend at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Later they went on a tour with the play throughout Scotland. Jess has played the role of Viola, an intrinsically trans character in the play Twelfth Night and the queer role of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet.
Chanliau has also played several other roles in different Shakespeare plays. Jess’ first movie role was a supporting role in The Riven. They appeared in one episode of Brave New World as BJill23 in 2020. In 2020, Jess filmed their first feature-length movie Inmate Zero in the lead role of Stone. The film was released worldwide. Most recently they were seen on the television show The Diplomat as Ronnie for eight episodes.
In addition to acting Jess has also learned techniques of Lecoq, Laban, Yoga, and Acrobatics. Jess did a residency with the Scottish Trans Alliance. They studied the rights of the trans community and how to advocate their rights. Jess is planning to work as an equity and diversity officer.
