James was born on 18th July 1985 in London, England. The name of his parents is Hugh B Norton and Lavinia J Norton. He has a sister named Jessica Norton. For his further studies, he went to Ampleforth College and after that, he went to Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge where he studied Theology.  He later decided to build his career in Acting and for that, he went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

James began his career in 2007 by working at Cambridge Art Theatre where he was seen in Cymbeline as Posthumus. From 2009 to 2015 he appeared in many theatre shows, films, and TV shows titled Posh, That Face, Journey’s End, The Lion in Winter, An Education, Rush, Belle, Bonobo, Mr. Turner, Restless, Blandings, By Any Means, Happy Valley, Life in Squares and many more. From 2016 to 2020 he was seen in many films, tv-series and theatre shows like Hampstead, Flatliners, Hero, Mr. Jones, Little Women, Nowhere Special, Bug Belive, War & Peace, Black Mirror, To Walk Invisible, McMafia, The Trial of Christine Keeler and more.

In 2021 his HBO Original TV series named The Nevers was released where he plays the main role of Hugo Swan. He will be giving an interview for the same where he will talk about his experience on the set. The same year he will see in an upcoming film named Things Heard and Seen where he plays the role of George Clare. which has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Soon he will be working back on the set of the film.
