Iryna Zarutska was a Ukrainian refugee who left the war-torn Kyiv in 2022 and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, with her relatives. She was friendly and artistic and wanted to create a new life in the U.S. although her age is young, she was recognized in her community as a kind-hearted person, gifted with artistic skills, and she had a desire to create a new life in the U.S.

However, her life was terminated in a ruthless stabbing as she was coming home after work on a light-rail train. Early Life

Iryna Zarutska was born May 22, 2002, in Kyiv, Ukraine, to parents Anna Zarutska and Stanislav Zarutskyi. She was brought up in a family with a sister, Valeriia, and younger brother, Bohdan. In Kyiv she graduated with a degree in art and restoration at Synergy College, a profession that was both a manifestation of her imagination and passion to create beautiful things even though circumstances were challenging.

Her childhood was characterized by the chaos of the war; she was taken to bomb shelters, she saw poverty and then her family made the decision to move. In August 2022, Iryna, her mother, and her siblings arrived in the United States in pursuit of opportunities and security.

It was there that she established herself to study English, to adapt to the new culture, and to work in many jobs to help her and her family. Career

After arriving in Charlotte, Iryna Zarutska did not wait for opportunities to be found. She had received the required work permission and started by serving at a senior assisted living facility and then as a caregiver, then at Zepeddies Pizzeria, and took pet-sitting and any other odd jobs that she could find. Personal Life

Iryna Zarutska had a serious romantic relationship with Stanislav Nikulytsia, also known as Stas. The two had spent a year together and had settled down in Charlotte, constructing a house and future lives through the tumult of refugee life. She allegedly sent her final text to him on the night of her death, informing him that she was coming home after work.

Her boyfriend has come out openly to lament and grieve at the news of her death; his social media has updated his bio with the symbols of remembrance, shared tributes, and spoken out against the judicial release in favor of the suspect. Emotional support, warmth, and the shared hope seem to have been of help to her as she was welcomed to the American life.

Killing of Iryna

Iryna Zarutska entered the train on 22nd August 2025 and chose an aisle seat in front of 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. He sat by the window in an orange sweatshirt. After about four and a half minutes, Brown pulled a knife from his pocket.

He unfolded the blade, paused briefly, then stood up and stabbed Zarutska three times, including one fatal stab on her neck, according to an affidavit obtained by ABC News. Officials reported there was no exchange between them before the attack. Zarutska died at the scene, and a witness quickly directed police to Brown’s location.

Police arrested him after doctors treated his non-life-threatening injuries. Officers later charged him with first-degree murder, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. Brown’s criminal record shows past arrests for larceny and breaking and entering. He also served five years in prison for armed robbery beginning in 2015, records from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction confirmed.
