Gino Mader Biography

Gino Mader, a Swiss cyclist who competed primarily in road and track events died on June 16, 2023. He was a member of the UCI WorldTeam Team Bahrain Victorious until his last ride. An unfortunate accident during the 2023 Tour de Suisse took Mäder’s life.

Prior to his professional career on the road, Mäder was a highly accomplished track cyclist. He competed in the team pursuit event at the 2016 UEC European Track Championships. He made his professional debut in 2019 with UCI WorldTeam Team Dimension Data. In October 2020, he was named to the start list for the 2020 Vuelta a Espana.

Early Life

Gino was born on January 4, 1997, in Switzerland and grew up in a family deeply rooted in the world of cycling. His father, Urs Mäder, boasts an impressive career as a former professional cyclist, having participated in the prestigious road race event at the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Furthermore, Gino’s mother, Heidi Mäder, is an esteemed athlete in her own right, having competed at the renowned 1982 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Gino Mader Career

Mäder was in a breakaway group that nearly won stage 7 of the 2021 Paris-Nice race. But Primo Rogli outsprinted him in the final 50 meters to take the win. He won the day’s prize for effort. Later in 2021, Mäder competed in the Vuelta a Espana. After dropping three minutes in the first eight stages, he started riding strongly in stage nine, placing sixth on the mountainous ascent to Alto de Velefique.

His impressive performance as Jack Haig’s domestique lasted for the remainder of the race. During stage 17, which ended on top of the Lagos de Covadoßßnga, Mäder finished in the elite group, 1.5 minutes behind the race leader, Primo Rogli. He now ranks in the top 10 on GC thanks to this performance.

The next day, on the race’s queen stage to Altu d’El Gamoniteiru [es], Haig and Mäder placed sixth and seventh, respectively, at over a minute down, with Mäder moving up to eighth on GC. On the penultimate stage of the race, a group of five men, including Mäder and Haig, escaped from the general classification group on the third-to-last hill. Also in that group were Rogli, Enric Mas, and Adam Yates.

Maintaining their lead over the competition, the group saw Mäder enter the top five overall and Haig climb to third place on GC as a result of the move. In the young rider category, Mäder surpassed Egan Bernal to take the lead. He finished the Vuelta in fifth place overall and won the young rider classification by maintaining his position in the final day’s time trial.

Despite being a famous Swiss sports star, there is no information disclosed regarding his relationship. Accident & Death

On the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse on June 15, 2023, Mäder collapsed in a curve while descending from the stage’s highest point at Albula Pass. It had only been a few minutes since the American rider Magnus Sheffield had fallen virtually in the same area. It was later discovered that Mäder was unconscious and floating face down in the water. He was resuscitated and transported to a hospital in Chur. Unfortunately, Mäder died of his wounds the next day.
