Faf de Klerk showed great skill in Super Rugby, earning a spot in the Springbok squad for the 2016 Ireland series. He made his test debut as the starting scrum-half in the first game at Newlands Stadium. Despite Ireland winning the first test, the Springboks fought back to claim the series with wins in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
Upon joining Sale Sharks in 2017, De Klerk couldn’t play for the Springboks as he had under 30 caps. But in 2018, Rassie Erasmus, the new Springbok coach, brought him back for the England series after the selection criteria changed. De Klerk played a crucial role in South Africa’s 2019 Rugby Championship victory and was selected for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
He earned the Player of the Match in the quarter-final against Japan. He was a key player throughout, starting in important matches and scoring a try in the quarter-final win. In the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final against England, De Klerk played as the starting scrum-half. South Africa emerged victorious, securing their third Webb Ellis Cup with a 32−12 win.
