Dan Hurley is an American basketball coach for the Uconn Huskies. He is currently in his 6th season with the University of Connecticut and during this span of time with this strict guidance and smart strategy, he took Uconn to the new heights.

Dan Hurley was born on January 16, 1973, in Jersey City, New Jersey. His father is Robert Emmet Hurley who is also a popular basketball coach. His brother Bobby Hurley is a two-time National Champion basketball player. Bobby played in the NBA for five years and is currently the head coach at Arizona State. His mother is Christine Hurley.

He started playing basketball in high school and was an outstanding player. He was ranked no.2 at the national level as a senior. Dan did his graduation from Seton Hall University and has played under head coaches George Blaney and P.J. Carlesimo.

Career

Dan started his career as a basketball player before becoming a full-time coach at the college level. He played five years of college basketball. He was redshirted at Seton Hall. His career total points are 1070 along with 437 assists. His team Pirates appeared in three NCAA tournaments.

Dan’s playing career spans over five years from 1991-1996. Directly after graduation, he went into coaching and joined his father at St. Anthony as an assistant coach in 1996. Dan stayed at St. Anthony only for one season and later joined Rutgers University as an assistant coach. In 2001 he became the head coach at Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School.

He helped the high school basketball programs become one of the best programs in America. He worked for nine years at Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School before becoming the head coach at Wagner College. The college stood sixth in the 2010-11 season and second in the following season. After that, he joined as a coach at the University of Rhode Island in 2012.

In 2017 Rhode Island became the champion of the A-10 Tournament and won the A-10 regular season championship the next year. Hurley won the Coach of the Year Award when he was still working at Rhode Island in 2018.

It was only in 2018 Dan joined the University of Connecticut and is still coaching there. Since his arrival in 2018 at the age of 50, Hurley was tasked with reviving a struggling program at UConn, and he succeeded.

Over his five-year tenure, the Huskies have shown consistent improvement, marking a remarkable journey back to the pinnacle of college basketball. Alongside this resurgence, there’s been a resurgence in the fan base, reigniting their passion for the team.

Controversy

Dan is quite known for his short temper on the court. The rivalry between teams is common but Dan took it to next level when he called the referee Jeffery Anderson a “fucking clown” in between a match. This outrage caught a lot of media attention.
