She served until August 1990 to June 1993 and later worked in education at Boston between July 1993 to June 1995.

She also served as Assistant Superintendent at Saint Paul Public Schools between July 1995 to June 1999, and then as an Assistant Principal High School in Minneapolis Public Schools from July 1999 to February 2004. She served as an Academic Administrator in Shelby County Schools from March 2004 to June 2007 and then returned to the Minneapolis Public Schools as just an Associate Superintendent until August 2007 to June 2010. Brenda then worked at East Metro Integration Unit 6067 as a Superintendent of Schools from July to December 2010. Brenda then became Minnesota’s Commissioner of Education, a position she held from January 2011 to January 2019.
