Early Life
Brandon Williamson was born on April 2, 1998, in Fairmont, Minnesota. His parents are Tod and Twyla Williamson and he spent his childhood with three siblings Josh, Dani, and Spencer. He loved baseball and basketball as a kid and excelled as a pitcher and a forward at Fairmont High School. Brandon led his team to two state tournaments during his school. He was named the Sentinel All-Area Player of the Year as a senior in 2016. He also earned All-State honors and was ranked as the No. 1 left-handed pitcher in Minnesota by Perfect Game.
Williamson attended North Iowa Area Community College, where he played one season for the Trojans. He went 7-2 with a 1.91 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 66 innings, earning him First Team All-Region honors and a scholarship offer from Texas Christian University. Brandon transferred to TCU, where he played two seasons for the Horned Frogs. He had a breakout year as a junior in 2019, posting a 4-5 record and a 4.19 ERA in 15 starts, striking out 89 batters in 81 innings. Seattle Mariners
Seattle Mariners picked Williamson as the 59th overall pick in the 2019 MLB draft, signing for a $925,000 bonus. He started his professional career at Short-Season A Everett, where he went 0-1 with a 2.35 ERA in six starts. Brandon missed the majority of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But pitched well at the alternate training site and started the 2021 season at High-A Everett. He went 4-3 with a 2.50 ERA in nine starts, striking out 71 batters and walking only nine in 50 innings.
Cincinnati Reds
Williamson was traded to the Cincinnati Reds along with outfielder TJ Friedl and pitcher Alek Jacob for outfielder Jesse Winker on December 15, 2021. He started the 2022 season at Double-A Chattanooga, where he went 7-4 with a 3.12 ERA in 18 starts, striking out 112 batters and walking only 24 in 104 innings. He was promoted to Triple-A Louisville in August, where he went 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in six starts, striking out 38 batters and walking only eight in 35 innings.
Williamson joined the main line of Reds on April 5, 2023, to fill in for the injured Hunter Greene. He made his debut against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, where he pitched five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Brandon walked two and struck out six, throwing 63 of his 95 pitches for strikes. He also hit his first major league home run off Kyle Hendricks in the fourth inning. Williamson became the first Reds pitcher to homer in his MLB debut since Mike Leake in 2010.
