Billy Howle Biography

Billy Howle better known as William Walter Doughlas Howle is a British actor famously known for his role of the defendant in “The witness for the prosecution” and his performance in “The Seagull”. He recently appeared in the Netflix crime series “The serpent” playing the role of Dutch Embassy diplomat.

Early life

Billy was born on 9th November 1989 in Stroke-on-tent, Staffordshire to his parents. His father is a music professor at Kent University and his mother a school teacher. He grew up with his three siblings brothers and is the second oldest amongst them. His older brother Sam Howle is a Graphic designer. Alfie Howle and George Howle are his younger brothers. Due to his father’s job his family had to move a lot. They moved a total of twelve towns while Billy was just a kid. They later settled in Scarborough. At the age of 13, he was involved in drinking, drugs, and minor offenses. He did not like school and didn’t get along with his teachers. Billy gradually developed an interest in music and got involved in a number of local bands in the town.

As Billy’s family had to move a lot, he had to change a lot of schools. The names of which have not been shared by him. Later when they settled in Scarborough, he completed his middle and high school education in the town itself. When he finished high school he chose not to pursue academics and instead went on to pursue dramatics as a career. He took part in various plays at the local theatre for a community project. Later he enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He studied there for three years and graduated in 2013 and was part of various plays like The little mermaid, Ghosts, and long day’s journey into night, during his years at university. Billy has shared that he applied to every possible dramatic school. Other than this he hasn’t shared much about his other qualifications.

Billy Howle Career

Billy’s had started appearing in a number of plays and dramas over the year in college and also at the Brooklyn Academy of music but his acting career started taking off in the year 2014 when he starred in the movie “Glue” in the role of James Warwick. He also appeared as Joseph in the series “new worlds” the same year. Later in the year 2016, he got a pivotal role of defendant, Leonard Vole in the series “The Witness for the Prosecution”. His performance was well appreciated in the series and he gained a reputation for his ability to handle emotionally challenging and complex characters. He co-starred in the film, The Sense of an Ending” as a younger version of Jim Broadbent’s character, Tony Webster. He also appeared in a historical drama film, “Dunkirk” as a petty officer.

His career took up when he appeared alongside Saoirse Ronan in the movie “On Chesil Beach”.  Later in 2018, he appeared in the film adaptation of a historical drama play by the same name “The seagull” also co-starring Saoirse Ronan. He had to work hard to get the role and after competing with hundreds of actors and going through rounds of auditions he secured the role. The same year he was cast in the Netflix movie, “Outlaw King” as the Prince of wales. He played other roles in Tv as well as films like Mother Father Son (2019)and Star wars: the rise of skywalker (2019). This year, he was cast in the BBC One and Netflix true-crime series, “The Serpent” in the role of a Dutch Embassy employee, Herman Knippenberg. He gave a promising performance in the show and has gained a lot of recognition and praises.

Personal life

Billy is currently in a long-term and long-distance relationship with his girlfriend Flo Rose. He hasn’t revealed much about her but has in several interviews told that she is not from the film industry. She lives in London while Howle lives in his home in Margate. The two maintain a distant relationship living in separate towns. Billy bought the house while he was shooting for Mother Father Son in 2019.
