Early Life
Art Cashin was born on 7 March 1941, in New Jersey, USA. He was named Arthur D. Cashin, Jr but he preferred to be called Art Cashin. He was born to Arthur Cashin Dr and Gertrude Cashin. He has two siblings, Betty and John Cashin. Cashin graduated from Xavier High School in 1959 and because his father passed away just a few months prior to that he didn’t attend college to help support his mother, Gertrude.
Art Cashin Career
Directly after his graduation, Cashin began working and started his career as an assistant clerk at Thomson & McKinnon on “Wall Street”. After five years, at age 23, he became a partner at P.R. Herzig & Company. With that, he became one of the youngest men ever to become a member of the New York Stock Exchange. In the 1960s, Cashin almost left his career in order to pursue singing. He was part of a folk group and was supposed to sign a deal with ABC Paramount Records, but the label changed its decision and signed another musician instead of Cashin’s group ending his singing career.
In 1980, he joined PaineWebber, as their Floor Operations manager. In 2000, the company was merged into UBS and that’s how step by step climbed and became the Director of Floor Operations at the NYSE. He later became one of the six Executive Floor Governors, the highest level at the NYSE. Cashin is also a member of the Market Perform Committee and many times offered advice and insights to investors and traders all around the world.
Along with being the Director of Floor Operations, Cashin also writes a daily morning outlook for traders, which is estimated to be read by more than 100,000 a day. He also provides live commentary on the current market situation daily for the CNBC news channel. Other than CNBC, he also frequently appears on other channels. Arthur served as the Governor and a member of the Market Performance Committee. He was also a member of the Market Regulation and Review Committee, and the Committee to Review the Constitution.
Philanthropy
Cashin was also heavily involved in a variety of charity activities at the New York Stock Exchange. He created the Exchange Christmas Dinner Fund in 1982, to feed underprivileged families during the holidays every year. In one year, the fund provided Christmas dinners at home to an estimated 185,000 people. In 1987, the fund was awarded a special citation by President Reagan. He was also the chairman of the NYSE Fallen Heroes Fund, which is focused on helping the families of NYC Police and Firemen killed in the line of duty. After the 9/11 attacks, the fund provided over $6 million dollars to families.

Art Cashin married Joan in 1962 and the couple has three kids from this marriage. One daughter, Jennifer, and two sons Arthur, and Peter. Art and his wife were happily married for 36 years, when in 1998, his wife, Joan passed away after a long struggle with cancer. According to the sources, he has been single since then. Cashin also lost his daughter, Jennifer at the age of 36 In 2007. His sons are both happily married and Art has three grandsons.
