Andra Day is an American singer and actress who rose to prominence and gained fame as a Grammy-nominated blues, R&B, and soul genre musician and also known for her portrayal of Billy Holiday in the Biopic, The United States vs Billie Holiday.
Early Life
Andra was born on 30th December 1984 in Edmonds, Washington DC. She grew up in Southeast of San Diego with her family although, she has not shared much about her parents but is known to be a Christian and of black ethnicity. Andra started singing at a very early age while she used to sing for First United Methodist Church in Chula Vista California. She credits her elementary school for introducing her to music and helping her develop interest. Andra also started dancing at the age of 5 and took various lessons. She is not known to have any siblings and is believed to be a single child.
Andra has not shared much about her early education but it is known that she attended Valencia park Elementary school and completed her high school education from San Diego School of Creative and Performing arts in San Diego and graduated in the year 2003. She took various singing and dancing lessons for several years but has not shared about any particular institute or teacher. She has not shared any other qualifications she might have.
Andra Day Career
Andra Day had a rough start to her career when she initially had to work at several odd jobs after her high school graduation. She worked in 20 different jobs and at one such job, she worked as a child artist. Day was noticed by Stevie Wonder’s wife in 2010 and received a call from Stevie himself who introduced her to the producer Adrian Gurvitz. She signed a contract with Buskin Records in 2011 and Jeffrey Evans became her manager in 2013. She secured a deal with Warner Bros records after she came to notice of people due to her covers and YouTube mashups and videos. Meanwhile, she kept working with Adrian on more than 40 original songs.
Later, in 2014, Andra performed for the first time at Sundance Film Festival and soon in 2015, she came up with her debut album “Cheers to fall” 2015 produced by Adrian Gurvitz. Her performance at the Sundance film festival caught the eye of director Spike Lee who later filmed her music video for the single “Forever Mine”. She also performed live on the 2015 BET awards and made several appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America, and other talk shows.
Widespread Fame
Her album broke several records and earned various praises and recognitions. She was often praised for having strong vocals and having classical Jazzy and pop sensations in her music and performances. Her songs started appearing in Tv commercials and as background tracks on shows etc. She also appeared with Stevie Wonder in an Apple TV commercial.
Andra had her first-ever world tour in 2015 in September 2015 and also got the opportunity to sing her song “Rise up” at The White house. She also started having partnerships with famous brands like McDonald’s and Coca-cola. In 2016, she performed at the Democratic national convention in Philadelphia and also performed at the Baltimore children’s choir at the March for our Lives rally in 2018.
She also started getting acting roles and her first-ever role was in the year 2017 when she appeared in the song “Stand up for something” for the film Marshall. The same year, she gave voice to a character “sweet tea” in the American animated movie Cars 3. Her breakthrough role came in the year 2021 when she was cast in the role of Billy Holiday in the biographical drama “The United States vs Billy Holiday”. Her performance was highly praised and appreciated and she received several awards for her role.
