Ali Wong, in full, Alexandra Dawn Wong, is an American personality and an established comedian as well as actress. She has received lots of accolades and praise for her appearance in stand-up specials like Baby Cobra (2016), Hard Knock Wife (2018), and Don Wong (2022). She has shown her acting skills and talent by working in TV shows like American Housewives. Previously, she has worked for the shows Amy Schumer, Black Box, and Are You There, Chelsea? and has also remained a producer for three seasons of the sitcom Fresh Off the Boat.

She has also worked as a voice actor for the animated series Tuca & Bertie and Big Mouth. She earned the honor of being called the Most Influential People of 2020 among the list of top 100 people by the Times. Recently she landed a breakout role in Netflix’s original comedy series Beef where she portrayed the role of Amy Lau. 

Early Life

Alexandra Dawn Wong was born in the Pacific Heights (San Francisco, California) neighborhood on 19th April 1982. She was born the youngest of four children to her Vietnamese mother, Tam “Tammy” Wong, and her Chinese-American father, Adolphus Wong (who died in 2011 and worked as an anesthesiologist for 30 years). She was the student body class president while studying at San Francisco University High School in 2000. Later, she went to UCLA, where she had her education in Asian-American studies. While studying at college, she spent her summers working at The Lair of the Golden Bear- a summer family camp by the side of UC Berkeley alumni.

Ali Wong Career

After receiving her degree from college and completing all her educational years, Ali Wong had a try with stand-up comedy at 23. Subsequently, she moved to New York City and started having comedy stand-up shows or gis performing nine times a night. Soon, she became a sensational personality in the comedy industry and earned the title of one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” in 2011. She started appearing in shows on TV and had the best of her appearance on The Tonight Show, John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show, and Dave Attell’s Comedy Underground Show. Wong also worked for various other shows on NBC comedy series like Are You There Chelsea?

She appeared exclusively on the shows like VH1’s Best Week Ever and MTV’s Hey Girl in 2013. Later in 2014, she played the role of Dr. Lina Lark in the ABC medical drama series Black Box, had a guest appearance in several episodes of Inside Amy Schumer, walked on the runway during New York Fashion Week for the Opening Ceremony of the show in September 2016, starred in the ABC’s sitcom American Housewife, appeared in the Netflix’s second most special show called Hard Knock Wife (released in September 2017), etc.

She also worked in the 2019’s Netflix film called “Always Be My Maybe.” From 2019 to 2022, she worked as the voice artist for Netflix animated sitcom Tuca & Bertie. Ali Wong also published her book “Dear Girls: Intimate Tales…Living Your Best Life”. She wrote the book to let her daughter read it once she reached adulthood. The book has further won the 2019 Goodreads Choice Award for the sense of humor being mentioned.

Personal Life

Ali Wong was previously married to Justin Hakuta, the son of inventor Ken Hakuta, whom she met at a mutual friend’s wedding in 2010. They married together in 2014 and since then have produced two daughters. After spending eight years together, the couple announced their divorce shortly after Ali Wong released her stand-up special in February 2022. She said they had been together for years but had come across many dissatisfied years and regret over their marriage, which now feels like a prison. Even after the divorce, Ali Wong and Justin Hakuta remained good friends and continued to manage their tour around the places for their work. After the divorce in the same year – 2022, Ali Wong dated Bill Hader shortly for two months.
