Abbie Cornish is an Australian actress and rapper, who is well known for her role in the movie Bright Star and Somersault. Abbie strongly believes in working for the cause of animal welfare. She committed to cruelty-free eating, by following a vegan diet, and in 2006, also became the ambassador for Australia-based animal rights group Voiceless. In 2012, she was a part of a national advertising campaign.

Early Life

Abbie was born on August 7, 1982, in Lochinvar, New South Wales, Australia. She is born to Shelley and Barry Cornish and is the second of five children. Talking about siblings of her then she has three brothers, Jade, Zack, and Hayden; and one sister, Isabelle. Isabelle is also an actress. Her parents split up when she was 16 years old. Abbie spent her childhood living on a farm, and later on moved to urban Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

She has been fascinated by independent and foreign films since she was a teenager. Abbie began her career at the young age of thirteen when she reached the final round of the Australian teen magazine Dolly Magazine competition. After reaching the final of a competition by Dolly Magazine, and winning a catwalk modeling competition, she was signed by an agent and sent to an acting audition. That audition led to her first role as an actor.

Since then, Abby has starred in various local pageants and competitions. She entered the entertainment industry with her role as Simone Summers in the television show Wildside, released in 1997. Abbie also won the Australian Film Institute’s Young Actor’s Award for this role. She then played Sara Boyack in the television show Close Contact, in 1999. Abbie then bagged the role of Mickey Norris, in her first film The Monkey’s Mask, which was released in 2000. In the same year, she also starred in the television show Water Rats. In 2001, She starred as Reggie McDowell in Outriders, and as Penne No. 1 in Life Support.

Widespread fame

In 2004, Abby starred in the award-winning short film Everything Goes, opposite Hugo Weaving, as Brianie. After that, she played the role of Heidi in the film Somersault, for which she received four award recognitions. In addition to this, she received the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress in the Leading role, FCCA Award for Best Actress, IF Awards, and the 2005 Miami International Film Festival Best Breakthrough Performance which gained her worldwide spotlight and fame.

She went on to star in a number of movies, including Candy, wherein she starred opposite Heath Ledger. Abby was also a part of Zack Synder’s film Sucker Punch, wherein she was a protagonist.  Abbie has played versatile roles in numerous films like Brightstar, Limitless, W.E., The Girl, RoboCop, Solace, Lavender, 6 Days, Perfect; and in television shows like White Collar Blue, Marking Time, Jack Ryan, and so on.
