Dusty May coaches college basketball in America as the head men’s basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University. Dusty May Early Life, Family & Education
Dusty May, who is currently 46 years old as of 2023, was born on December 30th, 1976. His father is Donald May while his mother is Sandy Garrett. Dusty May’s entrance into the world was a close call. Born prematurely in Terre Haute, a routine check turned urgent, leading to a sudden C-section due to collapsed lungs.
Rushed to the ICU, his first 72 hours were touch-and-go, keeping his parents on edge until he made it past that critical mark. Despite the rocky start, Dusty became unstoppable. Growing up in an active family, he followed his older brother and numerous cousins into outdoor adventures.
While others pursued hunting and fishing, Dusty found his passion in basketball and baseball. After his parents’ divorce, life shifted. Moving from Jasonville to Stanford with his mom, Dusty spent more time with his mother while his brother stayed close to his father.
He graduated from Eastern Greene High School in 1995. As a student, May managed the Indiana University men’s basketball team. After graduating, he started his professional career as an administrative assistant/video coordinator at USC from 2000-02.
He returned to Indiana and worked in an administrative role for three seasons before taking his first step as an assistant coach with Eastern Michigan (2005-06). In addition, May worked as an assistant at Murray State (2006-07) and UAB (2007-09).
Career
As an assistant coach and associate head coach at Louisiana Tech, May spent six seasons from 2009 to 2015. During his last season with the Bulldogs, the team achieved a record of 27-9, including 15-3 in C-USA, winning the regular season championship by two games, and maintaining an unbeaten record of 17-0 on their home court.
LA Tech demonstrated its dominance at home, winning 49 out of 50 games from February 2012 until the end of the 2014-15 season. When Mike White took over the program in the 2011-12 season, Louisiana Tech retained May as an assistant.
During his time there, the Bulldogs won three consecutive conference championships – the Western Athletic Conference title in 2013 and the C-USA crowns in 2014 and 2015. After spending three years as an assistant coach at Florida, where he aided the Gators in compiling a 69-37 record with consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, May joined FAU.
The Gators reached the second round of the tournament this year after making it to the Elite Eight in 2017. May’s teams compiled a 274-166 record (.623 winning percentage) while he was a full-time assistant. In their initial season in Gainesville, the Gators bounced back from a sub.500 record to finish 21-15 and progress to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
Rise to Fame
In his debut season, Coach May guided the Owls to their third-ever postseason appearance and a winning record. Xavian Stapleton snagged C-USA Co-Sixth Man of the Year, while Anthony Adger landed on the All-C-USA Third Team. As a team, the Owls smashed rebounding and free throw percentage records.
For Dusty’s second year, FAU scored big with their second consecutive winning season, a feat not seen since ’96-’97. Their home game wins hit 14, and they averaged 71.1 points per game, the highest in nearly a decade.
Coach May hit a milestone as the quickest FAU coach to notch 30 wins at the D-I level, stacking up 16 C-USA wins and 34 overall victories in two seasons. May’s magic continued as the Owls soared to a 66-56 triumph over Old Dominion at the C-USA Tournament, marking FAU’s first bracket win since 2002 in a neutral-site conference tournament.
