Zia Cooke is playing collegiate games and is committed to the South Carolina Gamecocks of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). she has been recognized as a five-star recruit by ESPN (after high school recruit). She has also earned the honor of McDonald’s All-American. She has been the recipient of a two-time All-SEC selection in college. Her presence in the team led the team to appear in the Final Four of the 2021 NCAA tournament.

Early Life

Zia Cooke (born January 2001) was brought up playing football in the boy’s team in defiance of her mother, Michelle. In reality, her mother wanted her to become a cheerleader instead of joining the team as a player. Later in 7th grade, Zia shifted her focus from football to basketball.

  • High School 

Zia initially played basketball for Rogers High School in Toledo, Ohio. She had a record of making 21.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, five assists, and 3.1 steals per game while being a junior in high school. Her presence in the team led the team to appear for the Division II state title, scoring 33 points and 14 rebounds in the title game, earning The Blade Player of the Year title. In her senior year of high school, one of her highlighted videos let her swiped into the limelight.

She averaged 21.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game and won the second straight state title. She has been recognized as the Blade Player of the Year and Division II Player of the Year honors and was selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American game. in high school, she was a four-game player, including softball, cross country, ran track, apart from basketball itself.

  • Recruiting

Cooke was recognized as a five-star recruit and earned the honor of being called the top player in the 2019 class by ESPN. In November 2018, she chose to play for South Carolina over 60 other offers from colleges like Tennessee, Mississippi State, Texas, Louisville, and Ohio State.

  • College 

On 13th November 2019, Zia scored a season-high 27 points with seven rebounds while being a freshman for South Carolina and with a win of over 75-49 scores against Dayton. She set a program record for games and was eventually selected to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Freshman Team. in her sophomore year, she had a season-high 26 points with a victory against Florida and an overall score of 75-59. On 2nd April 2021, she appeared in the final four of the NCAA Tournament and scored a team-high 25 points in a loss against Stanford with 66-65 points.

  • National Team 

At 16, Zia appeared for the United States at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship in Argentina and subsequently led her team to have the gold medal in her hands. While being in the team, she had an average of 10.8 points per game. She had another record of scoring 15 points and four rebounds against Canada in the game’s finals. Again, the team won the second gold medal after appearing in Belarus in the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup.
