Zaida Puni is a softball player who is doing wonders for the University of Tennessee Athletics in softball. Prior to her career in Tennessee, she selected Oklahoma over Arizona and Florida. While assisting St. Anthony’s to the CIF Division 6 Championship in 2019, she was named to the first team All-CIF. She assisted in leading her club team to the 2019 18U USA World FastPitch Championship in the summer of 2019. She was ranked No. 25 in the nation by Extra Inning Softball and No. 79 by FloSoftball.
A native of Carson, California, Zaida was born in the 2000s and she is the daughter of Selestina and Iotamo Puni. Zaida grew up with her three siblings in her hometown Zaniah, Juju, and Zyra. She comes from a family of athletes as her uncle, Michael Alo, was a football player at USC while her aunt, Adrienne Alo, was a softball player at Oregon State. Zaida is a psychology major and decided to enroll at the University of Tennessee because of the academics and the warm environment.
She transferred to UT from Oklahoma after her freshman year and has four years of eligibility left. Zaida has been awarded the Smokey Hensley Women’s Athletics Endowed Scholarship. She went to St. Anthony’s High School in Carson, California, and played travel ball for the OC Batbusters. During his junior year, she batted.382, totaling 31 hits, 21 runs, 27 RBIs, 26 stolen bases, and 16 home runs.

As a freshman, she appeared in 16 games, mostly at third base or as a pinch hitter, batted.357 in 14 at-bats, hit one home run, three doubles, and drove in six runs. She played as a pinch hitter in the regional game against Wichita State on May 23 and had a.786 slugging percentage and.399 on-base percentage.
In her lone at-bat against Morgan State in the regionals, she recorded a hit. On May 21, she also made an appearance at third base. On May 4, she went 1-for-1 with a double at Wichita State. She had a double and an RBI in her one-plate appearance against Liberty (3/14) and blasted her first career home run, a two-run bomb, against Sam Houston (3/7). Zaida had a season-high three RBIs in a 1-for-3 performance, three runs scored, and one double against New Mexico on February 27. She made her collegiate debut at Houston, recording one at-bat as a pinch hitter (2/21).
After hitting four home runs in NCAA Regional play during her junior year, her first at-bat against Texas in the NCAA Knoxville Super Regional (5/26), was a three-run rocket high off the scoreboard in left-center.She recorded a multi-homer game in NCAA Regional play for the second time in three days, leaving the yard in the first inning (two-run shot) and fifth inning (solo) versus Indiana (5/1).
She began and concluded the Lady Vols’ scoring during Tennessee’s 12-0 victory over Northern Kentucky on the opening day of the NCAA Knoxville Regional (5/19) with a solo home run in the first and a three-run bomb in the fourth.
