Wally Adeyemo is a Nigerian-American economic and political counselor. He was the inaugural president of the Obama Foundation and is President Joe Biden’s candidate for United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. Adeyemo served as the Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics and the Deputy Director of the National Economic Council during the Obama administration.
Early Life
Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo was born on May 20, 1981, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Having grown up in Southern California, he is the son of Yoruba parents. His father was a teacher, and his mother worked as a nurse. He has two younger siblings.
After graduating from Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California in 1999, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004 and a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School in 2009.
Wally Adeyemo Career
For the John Kerry presidential campaign in 2004, Wally Adeyemo served as the director of African American outreach and was located in the San Francisco office. He served as an editor at the Hamilton Project before entering the Obama administration. Adeyemo later worked as a senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to Jack Lew at the United States Department of the Treasury.
He was also the first chief of staff of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under Elizabeth Warren. Adeyemo was proposed for the position of assistant secretary of the treasury for international markets and development at the same time that Marisa Lago, the current assistant secretary, was proposed for the position of deputy United States trade representative in November 2014.
Wally Adeyemo was the president’s delegate to the G7 and G20, and he held many top management posts at the Treasury, including senior adviser and deputy chief of staff, as well as principal negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership’s macroeconomic policy elements.
Rise to Fame
After serving as the firm’s interim chief of staff for Laurence D. Fink, the CEO, for two years starting in 2017, he worked at BlackRock as a senior advisor. Adeyemo was chosen to serve as the Obama Foundation’s inaugural president on August 1, 2019.
Adeyemo was declared a candidate for the position of U.S. deputy secretary of the treasury in the Biden administration in November 2020. His nomination was sent to the Senate for approval on January 20, 2021. On February 23, 2021, a hearing was held before the Senate Committee on Finance.
Adeyemo received a voice vote on March 3, 2021, to report him from the committee. On March 25, 2021, the Senate likewise confirmed him. He was sworn in by Secretary Janet Yellen on March 26, 2021. Deputy Secretary Adeyemo has been highly involved in sanctions enforcement in 2022, visiting and communicating with foreign regulators to encourage their compliance.
