Vic Schaefer is serving as the basketball coach or the head of the Women’s basketball team of the University of Texas at Austin (Texas) Longhorns. Previous to this position, he served as the head coach for Mississippi State (2011 to 2020) and Sam Houston State (1990 to 1997).

Vic Schaefer was born on 2nd March 1961 and brought up with his sister named Elaine (the older sibling). His father’s name is Charles and his mother’s name is Dot. His father was a civil engineer and spent nearly 32 years in Army.

After a short stint back at Milby, he returned to Sam Houston State in 1990 for his first head coaching opportunity. Through 22 seasons as a head coach across three programs, Vic Schaefer has compiled an overall record of 478 wins and 211 losses, a winning percentage of .694.

At Mississippi State, his teams won 20 or more games in seven consecutive seasons, including three 30-win campaigns and a nation-best 37-2 mark in 2017-18.
Since arriving in Texas in 2020, Schaefer has compiled a 177-39 (.819) record through the 2025-26 season, making him the winningest coach in program history by percentage. The Longhorns have won 30 or more games in three consecutive seasons (2023-24 through 2025-26) for the first time since 1988, and since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, Texas is an astonishing 101-12 (.894).
Schaefer and UConn’s Geno Auriemma are the only coaches in women’s basketball to reach four consecutive Elite Eights. Schaefer is a happy-living married man with a wife and two adult children. His wife’s name is Holly; she was also an athlete of her time. She played basketball at Arkansas State and also served in the position of assistant coach at UT Arlington.
