Vic Schaefer Biography

Vic Schaefer is serving as the basketball coach or the head of the Women’s basketball team of the University of Texas at Austin (Texas) Longhorns. Previous to this position, he served as the head coach for Mississippi State (2011 to 2020) and Sam Houston State (1990 to 1997).

Early Life

Vic Schaefer was born on 2nd March 1961 and brought up with his sister named Elaine (the older sibling). His father’s name is Charles and his mother’s name is Dot. His father was a civil engineer and spent nearly 32 years in Army. Both his father and mother are no more now and are buried in La Grange, Texas. Vic spent his childhood in Houston and received his graduation degree from Texas A&M. he spent much of his coaching tenure in the Lone Star State, as stated by him to ESPN.in.

Vic Schaefer Career 

Mississippi State

Officially, Vic Schaefer was announced to be the head coach of Bulldogs on 13th March 2012. He was decided to be the replacement for Sharon Fanning-Otis, who was going to retire the same year at the end of the season.

During his tenure at Mississippi State, Schaefer led the team of Bulldogs to appear in almost five NCAA tournaments, Four Sweet Sixteen appearances, 2 Final Fours, 3 Elite 8 appearances, and 2 National Runner-up finishes.

His team had a great win at Marquette on 25th November 2019 with an overall score of 74-68. This marked Schaefer’s 200th victory as a head coach at Mississippi State. Also, the game was his 256th game at State. This made him earn the honor of calling “the second-fastest coach” and a milestone honor with an SEC program, after the hall-of-fame coaches Joe Ciampi (258 games), Pat Summitt (259), Van Chancellor (263), Jim Foster (280) and Sue Gunter (280).

It was shortly after the time of COVID-19 and when the lockdown ended after the 2019 to 2020 season. Vic Schaefer joined Texas filling up the position of head coaching vacancy.
