Tim Scott is an American politician who has entered the race for the 2024 Presidential Election. Tim was assigned to a position on the team of the Republican Party to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate in 2013 and subsequently won a special election the following year. He established his mark in history as the first African American Senator to be elected by a Southern state since the Reconstruction period. Prior to his stint in the Senate, Scott also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013.
Early Life
Tim Scott was born on 19th Septmeber 1965 in North Charleston, South Carolina, to Frances, a nursing assistant, and Ben Scott Sr. After his parent’s divorce when he was just seven years old, Tim Scott was raised in poverty by his mother. Despite the challenges of working-class life, Scott’s older brother went on to serve as a sergeant major in the U.S. Army.
After attending R.B. Stall High School, Scott earned a partial football scholarship to attend Presbyterian College from 1983 to 1984 before ultimately graduating from Charleston Southern University with a Bachelor of Science in political science in 1988. As an alumnus of South Carolina’s Palmetto Boys State program, Scott credits the experience as influential in his decision to enter public service. Politics
Scott ventured into electoral politics in 1995 by contesting for a position on the Charleston County Council, which he emerged victorious and served until 2008. Scott contested for an unoccupied position in the state House of Representatives in the identical year, and he was inaugurated as a member in 2009.
In 2010, Scott ran for a position in the U.S. House of Representatives and emerged victorious with support from various Tea Party organizations, two years after. The essential information regarding Scott’s successful bid for the congressional seat remains unchanged. He defeated Paul Thurmond, son of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, during the primary elections and easily won the general election.
House of Representatives
In 2011, Scott took office as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Following James DeMint’s resignation from his position as Senator in 2013, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley selected Scott to occupy his seat. Scott emerged victorious in a special election held in the year 2014 to complete DeMint’s term as Senator.
Scott held a firm conservative stance and typically aligned with the party leadership, dissenting against various measures proposed by President Barack Obama’s administration. Notably, he aimed to eliminate the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010; PPACA). Scott prioritized balancing the federal budget through a constitutional amendment and supported prohibiting earmarks. In terms of social matters, he did not support abortion rights or same-sex marriage.
US Senate
Scott was elected to the Senate once again in 2016, following which he lent his support to numerous policies of Republican President Donald Trump. He endorsed Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change and cast his vote in favor of repealing the PPACA in 2017, despite the defeat of that legislation. Additionally, he played an instrumental role in passing a significant tax reform bill that same year. In 2019, Trump faced impeachment charges after allegations emerged that he had withheld aid to Ukraine in an attempt to coerce them into opening a corruption investigation against Joe Biden, his political rival.
The impeachment process was subsequently moved to the Senate, which was under Republican control at the time. In February 2020, Scott voted for acquitting Trump, and as a result of this near-party line vote, the president was acquitted. Throughout his initial full term in the Senate, Scott became more outspoken on topics related to racism, particularly as Trump made remarks that were considered by some to be racist.
In 2018, he joined as a co-sponsor for a bill that aimed to establish lynching as a federal crime. Two years following this, amidst nationwide demonstrations against racial injustice, he created the Republican proposal aimed at addressing the issue. However, opponents of the resultant legislation – which could not secure Senate approval – argued that it did not adequately tackle police reform.
